I was just as eager as everyone else to receive a more updated version of Vash the stampede. However, I can say that this adaptation does very little to showcase the cerebral process of the original series. I have no qualms with most of the action sequences being animated with CGI or the fact that Meryl is a more integral part to the series itself. I would have loved to see something to the effect of what was poorly accomplished in the series in my opinion: a modern take on Vash's life in the dust bowl.
...
The element of Vash being a gunslinger which is commonly related to a more western aesthetic was completely glossed over. The psychological struggle that Vash and Knives were entrapped in is also thrown out the window, as Knives' motivation and methods to creating a paradise for him and Vash are now that of a childlike desire out of selfishness. Knives stated that he knew his choice was the right one as he made an informed decision in the original. He also thought that he was above humans who seemed to be indecisive and a plague to the planet, but his callousness and inhibition are completely stripped, and he becomes a more relatable being to suit the audience.
I liked the action sequences, and the main selling point of this anime is to question what it means to have an impact toward change, but I would not recommend people that were fans of the original see this anime. I believe that this could have been a spin off instead of an official retelling of the story we already know, but that's what never happens unfortunately. It could have been more entertaining and kneel less toward the CyberPunk aesthetic only for the aesthetic and not as a tool to retell the story.
