WARNING: MILD SPOILERS.
My entire viewing experience of this show can be described in one sentence.
I don't get it, but Mu is kinda cute.
The concept has a lot of potential, but the story suffers from less-than-average world building. Supposedly, music doesn't exist in this world, but the anime does a piss poor job of exploring that. There was something about Echo not knowing what humming is, but
...
that's pretty much it. It might be too early to tell, but it isn't heading in a good direction.
The "Equipment":
This is one big question mark. Where do these mechs come from? How do they work? How does a Vox amp turn into a giant robot? How did some kid gather some junk and turn it into a giant robot? This is probably some sort of twist or mystery that will be explained near the end of the series, but it sure as hell doesn't feel like one. It feels more like, "Yeah whatever, anime logic."
Speaking of the mechs, they are damn ugly. Simply unappealing and tough to look at. It's not even the fact they're CG, It's just bland design that doesn't feel unique at all.
The Rock References:
It's just not for me. I don't get the references. If you do, then good for you. Every time an alleged reference comes up: best case scenario it goes over my head, worst case it's just cringe. References and easter eggs should be there to add to the experience, not to take from it.
Mu and Echo:
I have to admit, I have a strange itch for this kind of naive, youthful relationship dynamic. Some of their interactions and dialogue put a stupid grin on my face. That's kinda it. Neither character has anything special about them right now. Though, to be fair, there hasn't been time for meaningful character development this early in the series so I'm going to leave it at that.
The Art:
I like the art style. I really do. The animation is good too (Especially the opening). It's just the mechs leave such a bad taste in my mouth. For a mecha show to have generic mecha designs is incredibly disappointing.
Final Thoughts:
I really hope this show gets better. I want this concept to work. There was an interesting bit about the traumatizing aspects about being a Player, being in the army, the fear of the Earless, and resorting to drug use. I hope the serious tones of this anime get better developed. For now, If you're a Mecha fan that doesn't mind generic mecha designs and has a throbbing itch for music and rock references, then give this show a try.
