Kokoro Connect is an anime I consider to be one of my favorite romance anime ever. It does many things right while not feeling too mundane at any time. The supernatural twists that the main 5 characters have to cope with make the show a blast to watch and was the major thing I enjoyed about it. As a side note, this review will be spoiler-free. Let’s begin.
Setting (7.5): While I do like the show, the setting is nothing special. Like most romance anime, it takes place in high school. I want to say that the high school setting helps add drama to the show,
...
but something like college would’ve worked fine (if not better). This isn’t really a big deal as the show doesn’t focus too much on school, not falling into the typical structure you see in most school anime. This is just something I wanted to point out that I didn’t necessarily like about the show.
Characters (9): If there’s one place the show shines, it’s the characters. I can’t say much without going into spoiler territory so I’ll have to keep this section short. Through the multiple supernatural twists, the characters must face their troubles head on, allowing for tons of character development. The romantic developments in the show are also brilliantly displayed within the characters which is always a bonus. I felt like all of the characters were interesting in the own rights and made the show awesome. Regardless, I do have a problem with Taichi being the “main character” of the show as he got the least character development (in my opinion). Besides that, I have no other problems with the characters.
Animation (8.5): The biggest thing I can say about the animation is that it is very misleading. The show incorporates a sort of moe art style that really doesn’t fit the majority of the show. There are many serious and emotional parts that the moe art style doesn’t portray very well, however, it didn’t bring the show down too much. The animation itself was done great overall, despite it being misleading. There weren’t many parts I could pick out for looking awful and the show had some moments where the animation really shined. That is why I think the animation deserves an 8.5.
Sound (9): The music in Kokoro Connect is well done and flows nicely with the scenes being displayed. I never found any problems with the soundtrack and it definitely helped the show in many ways. The only thing I think was missing from the soundtrack was one or two songs that stand out and really make the soundtrack memorable. There isn’t really a specific song that I can listen to in the soundtrack that brings back powerful memories about what made the show so great. Regardless, the soundtrack is still great and I can definitely appreciate that.
Pacing (9): The pacing in this show is amazing (in my opinion). It never felt like the show was going too fast or too slow. I never thought that anything was rushed and I never felt like setting the show aside for a later time. For the most part, the pacing was consistent and smooth, making me enjoy the series a lot more. If there are any problems with the pacing, it’s at the end. Without going into spoilers, the last arc of the show mainly revolved around one character’s “problematic mood” and it made the last few episodes drag a bit. This isn’t too big of a problem, but it keeps me from awarding this category with anything higher than a 9, sadly.
Kokoro Connect is a fun supernatural anime that is not what it may appear to be. It’s both heartwarming and depressing and provided a very interesting romantic story that kept me hooked throughout. I personally recommend anyone to try this anime out because you may be surprised at what is in store. That is why, I’m awarding Kokoro Connect with a score of 8.6 (8 as my officially posted score) and a letter rating of B+.
