The characters both go through hell in order to become incredibly strong. The anime of Arifureta is no where near as good as the light novels and I highly encourage people to read them without watching the anime if you can because it will ruin it for you. I will warn you that the harem genre is very apparent in the novels even if the main character really only does love one girl at first.

Oresuki has a lot of intrigue and it turns the Harem genre on it's head by making all the characters trying to destroy one another's reputations to try and be who they want to be with. It does have some annoying fan service and a swimsuit episode but I enjoyed it because the characters all felt real with good and bad traits for all of them. If anything at least finish episodes 1-3 for the huge plot twists that blew me away...
