Black Coffee is a very simplistic one-shot, which only left me feeling it had some wasted potential, it was definetly entertaining at some points, but it definetly feels like the manga ended up just feeling rushed and the ending forced, let me explain why:
At the beggining of the manga first I was impressed by the comedy, it mixed really well with the art and the environment, and it made me look forward for the other comedic moments that might come along. The premise of the manga also caught my interest, it seemed like although there wasn't anything complex about it, it could add up to
...
making an interesting story and taking the characters to different places where comedic situations could spawn, but right after that I felt the manga started taking itself too seriously. I honestly felt it was building up to be like a long series, where the events that happened in this one-shot, would be presented in the right moment as the series went along, and I'm not saying all mangas should be series, don't get me wrong, it just feels like this manga was being written as a series first, and then the artist remembered things had to happen and just rushed the plot to progress way too fast. I also felt the romance so thrown at me, I had no real investment in the romance of the characters, I was invested in them and what would happen, but the romance felt stale the moment it arrived. I feel that's exactly the biggest flaw of this manga, everything feels to be happening too fast and too forced, all of the important events needing plot convienence to happen, like the sister remembering all that stuff and telling his brother just for the fuck of it, and him knowing where Asaki was...don't know man, feels dumb man.
I still have some criticism to make, but it's kind of too subjective so I'll save it for myself. To sum it up, Black Coffee is not really bad, it has some strong points to it, it just feels bad for me as I feel it had the potential to be much better, all the strong point of this manga are not given as much importance and use, and all the weakpoints are put on the spotlight too much, that's why it's important for artists to know their strenghts and weaknesses, and I feel this manga needs more selfe awareness. I still read through it though, it really was fine, that's all I can say at the end, it just was fine, all of it, the art, the characters, the plot, they were fine...but "just fine" should never be what we settle for...

(Minimum spoiler in this review) Seeing how there's no reviews of this, I decided "Meh, why not?". I haven't read that many romance mangas in my time as a manga reader, but I must say I've seen plenty romance movies, and romance related things in anime and TV shows, mainly because I think love is part of every person's life, so it's impossible for a story to be told without even implying there is love somewhere, so I tend to be very skeptical when it comes to stories that are so centered in romance, romance stories are everywhere in entertainment, so is hard not to
...
read one of this stories and go "Oh, I've seen this before", as romance is something so overdone, which takes me to my first point:
Story (5): Since the beginning I was able to sense what the artist, Maki Miyoshi, was going for, first is the girl chasing after the guy instead of the other way around, then the guy turns out to be nothing like the prince charming the girl was expecting, you can see that the artist is trying to challenge the usual concept of romance and tell "a story never told before!", but as I said, romance has been done so many times that people have already tried to mock the way it works, tried to make some new kind of romance that the audience will be impressed by "Oh man I thought they were going to fall in love and live happily forever after, who could have anticipated such twist?!". The story is nothing amazing, just a new love story, that tries too hard to be different and ends up just being predictable. The second half of this manga is about Natsu's sister wich I think was more interesting, strong but weak, pretending she's not hurt when she is actually pritty pissed about the way her last relationship ended, this story is not as predictable and there are some nice insights on the characters feelings. Also the 6.5 is a nice little story, kind of cute too.
Art (4): *sad face* None of my liking, the blank backgrounds, the confusing expressions, the weird looking hands, blah, not torture for my eyes, but I didn't enjoy looking at it either, and art is very important in mangas.
Character (7): The strongest part about this manga. The characters all have something interesting about them, I personally liked more the ones in the second half, seems like Maki got a bit more personnal with some of the characters and might have reflected a bit of herself (which should always happen), I also sensed she might have based some of the characters in people she knows, I think that gave it a more human feel to the story.
Enjoyment (6): Meh, I did stick around long enough to finish it, the story telling isn't so clumsy, the characters are interesting enough to keep you reading, and there are some dialogues that are actually fun, a nice manga to read if you don't feel like getting into something complex, just a simple story with entertaining characters.
Overall (6): It's alright, not the best way to spend your free time, but at least you might enjoy some of it. Although the art is a huge turn down, the characters and the story are able to keep it entertaining.

I wouldn't usually write a review for an ecchi/hentai/harem/porn/incest/whydon'tyoujustjackoffalready?-anime, but people are being driven crazy by this thing, it's already got a score of 7.99(at least when I wrote this) and the OVA basically is what they don't get to jack off to--I mean watch in the regular To Love Ru Darkness season, I mean, I get it, the show is good at getting your dick hard, good, and it can also make you have some giggles and good fun on the process? Great! But is it really a 10/10 show? No, it isn't.
And if there is anyone who dares to say that is the
...
best anime they've ever watched, is because they probably mean it's the best porn they've ever watched, ask them to justify why it is the pinnacle of anime, and you'll see the anwser will be along the lines of "Can't you see how brave this characters are? They dare to have a guy touch them when he is already semi-kind of engaged! Not in this world man", "The art is soooo good! Have you seen the way those watermelons dance?", "I came 3 times that day", "My penis pretty much typed this review". And why? Why is it that all the people making reviews are getting so crazy about it? Well, that's because this is porn, what where they looking for when they watched this? Porn. The simple fact that they are looking at anime as a pure masturbation mean, makes them lose their criticism and can only say wonderfull things about it.
Now, I'm gonna stop being a dick to all those people who are controlled by their sexual lust and are not able to be critical about anime because of this reason.
Story (6): The story is not amazing, in Love-Ru we start off with the usual girl who falls in love with the main character and then they have a problem, and they have to fix it, they are given time, in that time more females are introduced, they all fall in love with the main character eventually, the problem comes back, and with enough -falling on their panties- moments, the problems comes back once again, and then it can either leave and come back later or end the problem and start something new. To Love-Ru is pretty much this, probably the only thing I've enjoyed in this new "lets create a Harem" deal, is the fact that Momo tries to get into Rito's mind and make him into a perverted playboy, wich adds somekind of psychological control, wich is a nice touch and I can appreciate it. I'd also like to add that Darkness probably beats the other To Love-Ru arcs, just for the fact that this might actually go somewhere, the character development is minimum but there is some of it...I think.
Art (9): I don't really care that much about art to be sincere, cause I believe a lot of people tend to ignore other animes just for the fact that the art style is strange or different to their usually anime, so I don't think the art makes the anime, but it can obviously be appreciated mostly in a show where the way characters look is so important. Darkness has a pretty solid art style and has a nice look to it.
Sound (7): I've never really liked the music themes in the To Love-Ru franchise, but I guess there might be someone out there who enjoys them, but is nothing I would consider memorable or outstanding, the sound effects in the show are good in setting the atmosphere, maybe not the greatest, but good.
Character (6): Well, maybe the part where most of the people might disagree with me, a lot of people can only say that the cast of characters is great, that they are all deep and amazing, original and well thought...this is one of those harem shows where the show is trying to make you pick which girl you like the most, there's nothing new to them, you can find them on other harem shows, where they try to introduce as many female personalities as possible (wich I wouldn't say is always bad -Kotegawa best girl) , the shy, the dumb, the responsible, the perverted, the athletic and then there's the one that's in love and the one that just wants some action under the sheets. Despite what must people may say, I think the characters don't have that much to them, they don't really seem to have motives in their lifes, they are always in the same mood until something happens to them, they don't really seem to be troubled with their every day problems, their personality just blends into the situation.
Overall (6): But overall, I enjoy the show, not because of the plot, not because of the music, just because it has some ok comedy and is good at getting my dick hard, I can't deny that. In the ecchi category I could even consider that it stands out from the others, but if I'm really critical about it and look at it as anime as a whole, is not that incredible, the plot is ok, sound and art are nothing life changing, but is enjoyable. An overall 6 in my eyes.
