Okay, overall this manga is good. It's fun to read sometimes, although it has (so far) 257 chapters, if you can pick it up and spend some time reading it you won't regret it.
Now onto the review. My biggest problem with this manga is the plot consistency, or rather, the lack of a plot. I think this is more evident with the romance subplot because in general, the manga is a slice of life.

...
progress is made (they just hang out, like I said, a slice of life) for like 220 chapters or so. And it's frustrating because the manga doesn't have a clear focus. Manbagi-san is just being used as a way for Komi-san and Tadano-Kun to become closer. YET they hardly have made any progress, and it angers me because when you have a romance tag, you expect at least a little bit of it, but the manga just throws around some romance chapters here and there and calls it "having romance" when afterward nothing moves forward or seems to happen... But moving on the focus of the manga.
For one, you have Komi-san's objective to acquire 100 friends, which seems to have vanished because there hasn't been much progress in that department either. In the earlier chapters, characters would be introduced, Komi-san would meet them and she would *directly ask* to be friends with them, and after that, they'd hang out in a group.
However, lately, there's just new characters being introduced, and Komi-san occasionally talks with them or hang out with them. We can't know if they've become friends, or if they are just classmates or colleagues in that department. Otherwise, should we count every encounter Komi-san had as a new "friend"? It's confusing. It lacks consistency.
There's also a problem with characters being forgotten. Komi-san would meet them, talk with them and hang out, and after some chapters, things happen and then those characters would, eventually or even from time to time appear in the background. And this is if they are lucky enough to even appear again on the manga. Again, no consistency in the story.
Well, that'd be expected out of a slice of life manga, right? So why am I nagging about that? you might ask. Well, the thing is, this manga wasn't supposed to be completely slice of life, as that wasn't the original premise the manga gave. When you start with an idea and introduce us readers to it, we expect that to be the main objective of the manga (getting 100 friends), however, the manga "failed" (or at least has shown little to no development) on that department, and it's frustrating because I've come to read this manga. After all, the original premise was so interesting, although I can see it hasn't been paid much attention to (Regardless of that, the manga was still entertaining to read).
And this brings me to my main point, that there is an evident lack of plot on this manga, even though it needs one. This is proven with characters being inconsistent, the prime example is that yandere girl obsessed with Komi-san. At first, her behavior matched with how her personality was described, but as time went on, she became more and more mediocre and uninteresting. Many times, characters have their special traits removed from them or shown to a minimum. If you are going to introduce characters, make sure they are consistent and at least come back now and then.
Also, many characters Komi-san could be friends with don't even speak to her and she doesn't try to speak to them, again, inconsistency. If she were trying to get 100 friends, she would have already been keener to approach others in her classroom, although they all seem to be merely background characters (such a waste).
And now, the inconsistent environment. At first, everybody hated Tadano-Kun for getting close to Komi-san. People would be very protective of Komi-san, and Tadano-kun would get troubled, but lately, everyone seems to ignore their relationship, no, in fact, they even support their relationship. This could be justified with "Tadano-kun just friended everyone" but in the past, it was the entire school against him, which also brings me to my next point that people seem to have changed their opinion regarding Komi-san.
People don't seem to treat her as the queen of the school anymore, and this is confusing because nobody should know other than Komi's friends that she has a communication disorder. You could also say her friends spread it, but we never see them doing so, and you could say that her getting new friends affected the way people view her, and while that is acceptable, just by getting friends she managed to (at least) change the opinion of almost everybody at the school? That's unlikely.
And also, many characters needed to fix their ways, yet those were ignored and instead used for comedic purposes, the main examples are that girl with OCD, Yamai-san. I'd just appreciate it if we had a little more closure with their problems because no one seems to notice those are still quite serious problems these characters (and many others) have. Although I won't complain much since this manga isn't the type of manga to be serious...
Now that I've talked about the main things that threw me off about this manga, I'm going to conclude that the biggest problem of the manga is its inconsistency. While it's true that it has many flaws regarding consistency, it was still entertaining to read, nonetheless. I hope you can take your own time to read it and form your own opinions about it but for now,
That's my review...

Okay... So, overall they adapted it pretty well, BUT my biggest problem is with Rachel.
They changed Rachel's character to make her more appealing to the audience, and more relatable/understandable. I hate this because Headon said she had to kill Bam to climb the tower... This didn't happen in the manhwa. She only did 'the thing' to Bam so Hwaryun and 'the others' could turn him into what he is in season 2 of the manhwa, therefore Headon never told her she had to *kill Bam, and this is a huge difference because in the anime it's seen as if she didn't have a choice to ... The first chapters were amazing and all. I'd recommend it.
I dropped it because the whole thing was drifting away from having an overall plot and going more towards the slice of life, which I do not enjoy as it just got... boring, for me. (especially as the story drags on and is still being updated to this day) However, the plot in itself is very good, the romance is cute, and if you like slice of life and you won't get bored reading it, then go ahead and finish the manga, but it has about 100+ chapters or so just about their daily lives. |
