Realistically a tennis player progress - like the main character in Baby Steps is very rare (almost impossible), however, it is evident that it is the most realistic tennis anime so far. Because of how realistic Baby Steps is, like the title describes, it is a very slow-paced for 2 seasons 20+ episodes each. I get it, it is supposed to be a story of a tennis player who only learned how to play tennis for 2 years, and him taking step by step progress. I think for some people, they might really enjoy this anime, but if I have to choose between the two
...
tennis genre anime, I'd choose The Prince of Tennis. Although The Prince of Tennis anime has 170+ episodes, they always have progress and a rewarding winning at the end. Yes, it is very unrealistic, but after watching a lot of episodes, I feel like I need a resolution or some kind of reward at the end, proving that I didn't waste my time watching all the episodes
However, with Baby Steps, yes it views a very realistic standpoint, but there are no rewarding feeling or any resolution after watching it.. I just feel more unsettled, which can be frustrated sometimes.
Also, I don't know why the opponent characters basically have some kind of bad attitude (or might I say unfair and cunning), or in the case of Alex from Florida.. Not only he went straight downplaying the main character, they still trying to make Alex looks good. idk if the writers are trying to either make the main character too nice or just plain making the opponent character a saint?
Idk, this anime just doesn't hit the right spots for me, I had high expectations and left with disappointment. Maybe if you like tennis and love a more realistic sports anime, it can be the right anime for you.
