The short version of the review: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is an insanely fun show with cool yet goofy characters, with great music and art, and very clever fights. I think you'll probably like it.
The MUCH longer version(you've been warned)
Story: From what I'd heard, this show was going to be all about the characters and the style, with the story getting less attention. To an extent, I heard correctly. However the story-while pretty silly in places- was more mature and well written than you'd think. Instead of spoiling anything, I'll just talk about the differences between the 2 parts this story is broken up into. The
...
first part takes the style of a darker tale involving an evil vampire in 1880s England, while the second part is a more camp (though still serious somehow) tale, that takes place in locations all around the world. Personally, I thought that the first part (episodes 1-9) took a little longer than it should have, with the middle section of the story dragging slightly, despite the cool fights taking place in it. This part also suffered the most from people constantly shouting commentary during the fights (and by people, I mean Speedwagon). This could get quite annoying at times, and slowed down the pace of the fights a fair bit. Part 2 suffers this as well, but less so to the point where it didn't bother me as it did in part 1. And while the plot for part 2 was better than part 1, it wasn't a masterpiece. It was just good. Better than average, but not spectacular.
Art: The animation for this show was fairly average. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special (except for the opening). The reason I give the shows' art an 8, is because of the designs and the style in which everything is done. The show uses a very colourful palette for a lot of characters, and in certain scenes, the colours will all suddenly change. This means characters hair and clothes often end up changing into different in colour within the same scene. This may sound jarring, but for me it added a distinct charm to the shows art that no other show has shown me. The character and background designs are also incredibly good, and some characters look similar to other characters in different franchises. Just know that this is due to 2 reasons. 1) The show is parodying someone, or 2) The JoJo character IS the inspiration for the character you recognise.
Characters: Now this category is where the shoe truly shines. Mostly. I'll only give my impressions of the 2 protagonists though. I don't want to influence your views on the others should you choose to watch this show. Firstly, part 1 protagonist Jonathan. He's...generic. He's easily the dullest character in the show. He's a goody goody and fights like a faulty standard shounen protagonist. But he's supposed to be, since he's a direct parody of Ken from Fist of the North Star. Not that he's not likeable. He is. He just doesn't hold a candle to part 2 protagonist Joseph. Joseph is the best part of this show. He's over the top, rude, and seems completely off his rocker to most people. He's also the most clever protagonist I've ever seen in terms of fighting. Joseph fights completely opposite of how you'd expect a protagonist to fight: dirty. He is not afraid to pull out every cheap trick and clever tactic he knows, rarely ever fighting his opponent fair and square. And this is what makes watching him so fun. That and his gratuitous Engrish. Which is hilarious.
Sound: This shows OST is good, but honestly isn't very catchy. The reason this area scores so highly is for the openings and ending. The openings are amazing both musically (especially part 2)and visually, and the ending uses a 70s song by the English band called Yes. Honestly not much more to say about this one. The openings and endings are amazing, the OST is good too.
Overall: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is hard to put into words for a review. Because its just an enjoyable experience. The story is good but it isn't going to win any awards. The art is very stylish, even of the animation is only average. The sound is mostly incredibly apart from some unmemorable tracks. The characters are just the best though (ok maybe not Jonathon but he's still better than most protagonists). It's a great show because its fun. If what I've said sounds cool, you need to watch it yourself. If not, then you definitely shouldn't unless you're willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
(This is my first ever review on this site, so sorry if it's a bit pants)
