The love and passion put into the world of Evangelion is immaculate all of the technology and it’s nook and crannies is impeccable. The structure of Tokyo 3 and NERV and how it operates under threat is a feat I feel is yet to be surpassed. This is arguably my favourite aspect of Evangelion.
The cinematography far surpasses most anime. The shots of Tokyo 3 ,forests and ins and outs of NERV are wonderfully presented. Whenever characters talk about key points it will most likely be paired with an shot that amplifies the scene. This goes double for the horrifying and visceral moments.
The characters I believe
...
are mostly strong as they show visible development throughout the duration of the show. The biggest highlight is Shinji, he goes from an existence of self loathing and hate to the eventual realisation that he should just accept himself and others into his heart. However this is also to the show’s detriment
The “deep” aspects of the show I personally feel aren’t all that “deep”. All emotions and self reflections which characters goes through have either been written or done better in other shows an example would be Vagabond and Berserk. This is not to say that is wrong the end result is mostly good but spending entire episodes on artsy trips while characters talk in circles doesn’t do the end result justice. The most prime example is Shinji, he is the show’s main focus as they spend multiple episodes on his mindset as he faces the many obstacles throughout the show and how he relapses when faced with difficult scenarios. However spending entire episodes with extremely repetitive dialogue does not do his character justice. All other characters explores in this way are also given this treatment.
The ending was a quite controversial as the show again focuses its finale solely on Shinji instead of the world and the characters. Asuka’s character suffers from this, as when going on a journey of self doubt which was new to the character who was previously quite courageous and confident. This is was surprising and I wanted to see her get through it properly but the show gives her the artsy trip where she repeats dialogue and moments from her life and tells us that she isn’t doubtful anymore. There are also a number of mysteries which were yet to be revealed but didn’t. An example being SEELE’s motives and what comes next for the Angels among others, in my opinion they should have given less time to “trippy self reflections” and more time to exploring such mysteries
Despite all of these flaws, Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most ambitious, thought out and interesting anime I have ever watched. It’s concept though a bit played out in media(post apocalypse, sci fi) it manages to be unique with its world. It had me gripped from start to finish(excluding some of trippy “deep” self reflections). I have given it an 8/10, though that may change as time passes to a 7/10.
