THIS REVIEW CONTAINS A FEW SPOILERS SO READ AT YOU'RE OWN RISK. Detective Conan has to be my favourite anime. Everything about it is perfection to me. The anime first started in 1996 and is still ongoing to this day. Because of that we get to see the changes of the art and colours. Some people don't like the art in the first few hundred episodes but I personally do. I most liked the art around episode 500-600. In my opinion the art was great there. The colours still retained the darker mood from episodes before 500, whilst also having a great consistent style.
...
Of course I do like the art in the most recent episodes but there are a few changes, such as using brighter colours. Other than that I really like the art style and character designs. A few people who haven't watched the anime or read the manga have told me that the art style is weird but it's just a bit different. The art style is great and I love it. The animation is really good as well. Although this is a detective anime, it sometimes calls for action. The animation when action is required or in general is just really smooth and good. This is evident in episode 345 and other different episodes. The main plot in this story would be the black organisation plot in which Shinichi aims to encounter them in order to find an antidote for APTX 4869. You don't get a big amount of Black Organisation episodes but when they do appear they are amazing. The wait for Black Organisation episodes may seem even longer if you watch the filler but I wouldn't recommend watching the filler. Aside from the main plot, we also see the changes in everyone's daily lives and how they are affected. Not that many main characters are affected by Shinichi's disappearance except a few. Shinichi's disappearance did cause a big shock to all his fans as he was well known for solving cases. I say Shinichi's disappearance because to everyone apart a few people, he did disappear. Not that many characters know about him shrinking because of the drug. In fact, I think the amount of people that do know can be counted on both hands. I said that I don't recommend watching the filler and that's for a very good reason. The anime started airing about two years after the manga was serialised. The manga was serialised in January 1994 and the anime started airing in January 1996. There was only a two year gap and because of that most of the material in the manga could be quickly covered. There is a lot of filler in this anime and barely any of it is good. In order to prevent the anime from catching up to the manga, a lot of fillers had to be released. If there is a lot of filler then the plot won't be good every time or at all. Such is the case in Detective Conan filler. As of now there is about 432 filler cases and 500 and something canon cases. The filler sometimes makes things up and confuses you about the characters and the plot line. It was a mess for me wondering what the canon was and what the filler was. There are filler lists online if you wish to skip these episodes but if not then feel free to watch them. Detective Conan focuses on: the black organisation plot, the regular detective cases, the romance plot and a few other things. The music contains quite a lot of jazz in the early episodes and some of those tracks haven't been used in a while but I love the music. The soundtracks of perfect in my opinion and I especially love "ai wa itsumo" which has been played in a few memorable moments such as in episode 345 and I think in the Desperate revival act as well. The openings and endings also have perfect music choices and brilliant visuals. My favourite openings have to be opening 13, opening 26 and opening 48. I am very bad at binging series. It takes me forever to watch and I usually have to take breaks and read other things i between them. With Detective Conan I didn't have to do so. I managed to binge a lot of it whenever I had time and it was really enjoyable. It has a little bit of everything in it so you never get bored. The build up to the black organisation episodes is amazing and I love as the mystery and tension builds up until you finally get to see those episodes. The humour is perfect and is placed at the right times. This anime is amazing and so is the manga. The author knows went to make it sad or when to make it happy and light hearted. Everything is placed perfectly. Just when you think things are happy, you are reminded of the grave severity of the situation or a character's feelings. But even after all these sad moments you are also reminded that things are not so bad and that these things can be happy. I really love the characters. Their actions are consistent and their changes make sense. We see why they change and understand their changes. They don't tell us everything in this anime regarding the characters; we sometimes get to see it. Even when we don't know everything about the characters at first, we learn about them from there interactions with people, people's opinions on them, flashbacks, from other characters and from what they think themselves. We aren't just given a character and told everything about them. Even when we know their name and occupation we won't ever get to know who they actually are unless you watch the whole thing and see how they develop. The characters are simply amazing. This is excluding how they are presented in the filler. I'll give you an example of character development. It's found present in our very own main character: Kudo Shinichi. At first we see him as very confident and he has a bit of an ego. We don't get to see Shinichi as himself except for the first episode, flashback episodes and flashbacks. Even though we don't see much of Shinichi as he was before, we see him as Conan. He goes from this confident person who has loves being a detective and playing football and liking Ran, to see him kind of fall. His life before the drug was much happier. He managed to be a high school detective and play football, he could see Ran every day and he was quite well known to a point that I may even say famous. After the drug he was kind of stuck. He managed to still go to murder cases and he could solve them but no one listened to him. He was just a child to them and a child would never be able to solve a murder case. Even when he was a teenager people didn't believe he could solve cases at first until he proved them wrong. At least people could listen to him as a teenager but as a child he could practically do nothing. He managed to solve cases through other people but people would only think that he was good at noticing things. Him being a child wasn't the only reason why he couldn't solve cases. His life would be at risk if the organisation found out he was alive. The drug they gave him was only supposed to kill. That's what they thought but another result was hidden from them. You can see this in Detective Conan Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small. You should only watch that after you have caught up with all the episodes though. The organisation that he is dealing with kills people. They don't hesitate at all. He is the spitting image of himself when he was younger which is why he needs to be careful. He loves being a detective so much and he wouldn't want to see a case go unsolved. Most of the detectives in the police in Beika are pretty much useless. There are good detectives but they are usually in other places or rarely show up. Shinichi wouldn't want to see a case go unsolved. Because of this and the fact that he loves solving cases he has to get involved. Being Conan has really taught Shinichi a lot of things. He realised just how stuck he was as he couldn't risk revealing his identity and he had to see his childhood best friend hurting. It hurts him to be in this situation but it's also his motivation to keep fighting in order to return. The drug has also robbed him of his high school years. When we see him return as Shinichi, we can see that his character has changed. He has to keep it a secret, he is more happy and feels more free because he's able to solve cases without any restrictions and he doesn't have such a big ego anymore. He's also happier since he is him again and he can be with Ran. That never lasts for long though. His time as Shinichi is restricted. He usually leaves things on a cliffhanger when he leaves again. He has definitely changed and has become a better person. I mentioned a romance sub plot and there are many ships in Detective Conan but the main romance sub plot is between Kudo Shinichi and Mouri Ran. Ran is his childhood friend and the person he has liked for the longest time. Honestly, her and Shincihi are my favourite characters in the whole anime. She is brave and strong and it's clear that Ran and Shinichi have both influenced each other in different ways. I love their romance so much. There honestly isn't that much but when it happens it's beautiful. The story in itself is so well written but this ship and the characters are also really well written. I really don't want to spoil but I have already for a few other things. A few of the characters that people hate are the children and Yamamura. As you know, the fillers include the movies. The early movies are the best and I hate more of the recent ones. You need to watch some of the more recent ones for various reasons. For example in Raven Chaser a certain character's position changes from a detective to an inspector at least I think it was Raven Chaser. In the Crimson Love letter as well a new character is introduced. The reason why these are important is because sometimes the changes in the movies or characters added become part of the manga. The change from detective to inspector remained in the manga and the new character that was introduced was put into the manga before the movie to kind of introduce her to the readers. You won't actually get to know who she is unless you watch the movie though. One thing that people complain about is the timeline. The reason why the timeline is weird is because it is a floating timeline. I think the reason why it is like that is because Gosho Aoyama didn't originally think that Detective Conan would originally be that long and so the timeline is sort of messed up. About 6 months have passed in the current story though. I really love the story and the characters so this review is a bit biased. I am someone who watches an anime and reads a story in order to enjoy it and not critique it. This review is simply from the perspective of someone who enjoys and doesn't critique. If I'm honest the only thing I hate about this anime is the fans. Now this isn't every fan but in particular the toxic CoAI fans. I honestly hate that ship and I don't know why it exists. Well some of the fans that like that ship are toxic and like to attack people who ship ShinRan and just say the characters are stupid WHEN THEY HAVEN'T EVEN TAKEN THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTERS. It drives my head in. There are also fans who ship paedophilic ships so stay away from that. For ShinRan fans the places to go are Wilson4869 who has a channel on YouTube and posts ShinRan stuff but also other Detective Conan clips. there is also r/ShinRan on reddit which has a bunch of fans of that ship and there are links to resources for you to use or things you want too enjoy. There are two Detective Conan subreddits which are r/Detective Conan and r/OneTruthPrevails. I haven't been on r/DetectiveConan yet but r/OneTruthPrevails is alright but I don't go on that. There aren't that many Detective conan videos or openings and endings on YouTube in English because it is less popular in the west. Detective Conan is more popular in the East though. This review was supposed to be spoiler free but me being an idiot accidentally included them in here and I can't be bothered to take them out. I've also been writing this for ages so I may have made some mistakes.
