I appreciated how this series tried to diversify itself from the classical anime romcom. Indeed the main focus is no longer the development of a love story between two characters, but a more realistic take on teenagers's lives between bullying, alienation and romantic delusion, very far from the usual pure and naive tones that distinguish this kind of story. The MC Hachiman is the embodiment of a nihilism slowly unraveling the selfish nature behind some appearantly genuine ideals, showing the fragility of bonds, and denying conveniences like teamwork, getting just an excuse to overload someone else with your own job. Even though the copious presence

of dramatic scenes, the series balances them very well with the comedic ones, where we see the Service Club interacting with a wide range of characters creating hilarious moments, enhanced by a charming visual direction handling very well the copious dialogue without getting boring. The cast is not really memorable, but every character makes his role very well. I don't like Yui that much, she had an interesting role at the beginning, especially because of the revelation about her bond with Hachiman, but then she turned into the most classical love interest for the MC with even an annoying voice actress. I liked more Yukino, not only because the series hardly ever shows her as a love interest, but because I like characters who feel pressed from their enviroment and try to do their very best, her wish to genuinely change what she think wrong in school is a well-done antithetical figure to Hachiman's lazy nihilism, at times wavering between an displayed maturity and a more hidden naivety. Overall, a refreshing and well-directed romcom with a likeable cast and two very good main characters

As I have already written in my review for the main series, I am not very fond of Emilia and I can't say this film cleared my issues. On one hand, I appreciated how she embodies the pain suffered by discrimination victims, lots of scenes of the film perfectly communicate her sense of sorrow, even on a visual level we have lots of iconic and beatiful scenes. But on the other hand, Emilia is still too perfect, too good as a person, never showing any kind of flaws or negative feelings towards other (except probably an ambiguous scene in the middle of the film, but

I don't think that was enough by itself), and this brings to simplify the themes she embodies. This flaw is even more annoying considering she is always paired by immoral, flawed and well-written characters. Talking about Puck, he is the real star of the film, there are still lots of mysteries surrounding his relationship with Emilia, but we can see him genuinely attached to her, a real father-like figure making even atrocious things just to protect her and to see her smile, which is a side of Puck almost ignored by the main series. A minor issue is about one of the villain, especially his introduction, I have found him a caricature, excessively hateful in every aspect, and the cheap cliche of sexual harassment was annoying. Even though my issues, overall I found this film was a good digression about Emilia and Puck, and full of stunning moments on a visual level

This OVA perfectly portrays one of the most appealing parts of the main series: comedy and character interactions. We see the characters acting in a more lighthearted context, between their hilarious attempts to spend together a good snowy day. Visuals are good, more or less on the same level of the main series, with the direction giving much charme to the most heart-warming moments, and as a whole it was more consistent than most of episodes of the series. There is not very much to say, but if you, like me, enjoyed characters' dynamics between Subaru and the cast from the first half of season

I am not the greatest fan of fantasy genre. I have always found it had much potential, but I was continuously disappointed by the great amount of boring and overabused clichés, and even in this case I can't say Re:Zero is at the top for originality. Stylistically the setting is kinda stereotyped: a medieval country with lots of forests, rich castles, and little towns full of houses which look all the same. But at the same time the series is able to distinguish itself, mainly because of its MC. At the beginning, Subaru is shown as a simple and relatable young man slowly trying to

adapt himself to his new life, while creating genuine bonds with people around him. Subaru's interactions with most of the cast, especially in the first half of the series, are hilarious, tender and for these reasons a joy to watch. But what makes Subaru a great protagonist isthe fact that he is an extremely flawed human being, he's greedy, cocky, selfish, childish, lazy and coward, and like every human being he looks for justifications to cover his insecurities, and from the second half of the series we can see slowly falling apart the image Subaru had of himself, realizing his despicable flaws, and his attempts to be a better version of himself give a refreshing take to his coming of age story. More, I loved the parallel between Subaru and Petelgeuse, he is a very good villain perfectly showing a degeneration of Subaru's attachment towards Emilia, being pure and genuine but at the same time potentially obsessive and self-destructive Unluckily, I found the final episodes underwhelming, after such a dark and introspective stretch of episodes, the last arc showed a too sudden return to the lighthearted atmosheres of the first half, but with a vastly inferior cast of characters. More, I am not the greatest fan of Emilia's character, I appreciated the way the series tried to portray discrimination through her storyline, but I don't think it was necessary to make her a kind of Mary Sue. About visual department, there are clear flows due to low production values, like incosistent character designs and CG models, but I enjoyed direction, especially during dialogues, it set perfectly the most comedic and dramatic tones of the series, without never getting boring. Overall, a refreshing and well-directed fantasy with a very solid protagonist and a likeable cast, even though an excessively convenient ending.
