When you're a pretty new viewer of anime (like me), it can be hard knowing whether or not to watch an older series. Many people who may have left reviews for this show say they used to watch it as a kid, or saw it on Toonami.
I am neither of these people. And, oh boy, was I glad to step out of my comfort zone for once.

time.
The story follows the adventures of a half-demon called Inuyasha, a girl from the future, Kagome, the pervert monk Miroku, the demon-slayer Sango, and the little fox demon Shippo. I'm not going to go into details about each character, but they are a very important part of the story.
The group travels feudal Japan in search of the evil demon Naraku, who possesses the Sacred Jewel. Sounds pretty cliche, right? Yes, and no. What makes the story of Inuyasha so enjoying and fun to watch is the lore, along with the plot. It's so interesting slowly learning more and more about the human and demon world, and what happens when they collide. What exactly is a priestess? What can they do? Why is it a big deal Inuyasha's a half-demon? The story does slowly answer these questions, and they always do it amazingly.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the story lies in the past. Fifty years before the main story of Inuyasha, the mystery surrounding Kikyo, Inuyasha, and Naraku is a great part of the story, both in enjoyment and significance.
Art: 8/10
I wouldn't say the art was bad, but compared to other projects of the time, it could have been better. It doesn't distract from the show, but it would have been nice if the first season looked a bit better. By season six, the art greatly improved.
The art style itself is very appealing, and has a very unique look.
Sound: 8/10
There's nothing wrong with the sound in particular, but when you watch 167 episodes with the same soundtrack, it gets boring. You know its bad when you've memorized every track played in the series.
The sound effects are also repetitive. Perhaps if the soundtrack was redone, even just once, it wouldn't feel as boring and repetitive.
Character: 9/10
The characters is why I, and many others, love this show. All of them are
relatable in some way. They all have some sort of quirk or gag that really makes them stand out. Really, I don't think I would have sticked through this entire series if the characters weren't great.
That being said, with this many episodes, there's bound to be the bad ones. And there's a lot. Most of the villains are forgettable and bland, like a copy and paste. Almost every fight with one of these characters are the same. They're powerful, Inuyasha uses a new power, and beats them.
Oh! I almost forgot some of the most important characters of the series. Kagome and Kikyo. I'm not going to spoil anything, don't worry. On the internet, you may find many differing opinions about these too. I'm going to try my hardest to keep my bias out of this review. Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo (which you find out in the very beginning of the show) and there you go, love triangle. The whole thing is just so... annoying. Anyways, both Kagome and Kikyo always played the damsel in distress role (mostly Kagome). We know they have incredible power, so why do they always have to be saved? This isn't considered a character flaw, it's just bad writing.
Character development is something this series does amazingly well. Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kohaku are probably the best examples of this. If i were to watch the first episode right now, they'd seem like different people. You really see how they grow and change, and it feels great.
Enjoyment: 10/10
Despite its flaws in the characters, plot, and media elements, I enjoyed the heck out of this show. I would constantly find myself staying up way too late just binge watching this, and I loved every second of it. Yea, Kikyo always annoyed me. Yea, the villains were boring. Yea, Kagome was useless like always. But it was still fun.
Overall: 10/10
It's incredibly hard to pinpoint exactly what made me love this series, but if I had to choose something, it would be the characters. You can't help but love the main cast and root for them, and see what adventure they'll go on next. It's fast paced, and the fights and fun to watch. Inuyasha is the perfect show for a Saturday afternoon, to just relax and have a blast.

This is not the best anime I've seen either, but I feel like it should receive a bit more credit.
(By the way, I've never played the game it is based off of) This is a sports anime. If you were looking for a "romance", it's not here. Although I feel like I could have fit it in, the new ideas and concepts make up for it. The story follows a group of high school students that participate in FC, or Flying Circus. The players, using anti-gravity boots, race each other to these buoys or try to tag the other players back. Pretty simple, but also pretty creative. Now, ... |
