Want a show where you will both laugh and cry like never before, occasionally at the same time? If so, Angel Beats is for you!
Story: Very confusing. You don't know what exactly the heck is going on for quite a while, and I had been wracking my brain trying to figure some things out for a few weeks after I had finished it until my friend and I walked through it together. But you know what? I didn't care. The episodes sometimes felt like mini-stories that comprised the whole plot, so if you can figure out what is happening one
...
episode at a time, then you should be fine. Speaking of the episodes being separate, the vibe takes that direction as well. Half of the episodes are hilarious. Despite consisting of mostly physical comedy, the humour is seriously funny. No matter how old you are, you can't help but laugh at a guy being rocketed into the ceiling by a jet-equipped desk. Multiple times. On the other hand, the other episodes contain some of the biggest tear-jerkers I've seen, and I've seen FMA. I felt that it was a good kind of sad, though, as some of the episodes were more heart-warming than heart-wrenching. You know a show is powerful stuff if those emotions are swirling (Be warned that there are one or two actually depressing bits)
Art: Everything is shiny! The characters, and their eyes in particular, all seemed to have a weird glow to them. This is sort of neat since you don't see it every day. Also, the colours were crisp and bright, and it somehow made the typical anime blue and purple hair look good. Excellent.
Sound: I don't remember background music it standing out too much, but it wasn't a problem. I did take note of some of the other music, though. The opening tune's piano melody was beautiful all by itself, and the songs played by the show's band, Girl's Dead Monster, were some particularly cool pop tunes, and one sad, sweet acoustic ditty. So, good where it counted.
Characters: Too many! The ones we got to know were interesting, and opinions of the characters grow and change drastically as the show progresses. These changes bring realness to the characters, and viewers will feel strong emotions toward them. But those guys were only the tip of the iceberg. There are piles of other characters that we only know a bit about. I will admit that these bits are interesting and those characters seem likable taken at face value, but viewers will be left expecting more from them.
One con: Too short! A lot more could have happened in this show. It could have developed the background characters (I wanted to know what the stoner guy's deal was), or simply added more to the plot, which would have been welcome as, despite its goodness, the story's details were a bit sparse at times.
Overall: This program, as mentioned, leaves you wanting more. Obviously, though, that means there was something there to begin with. This show is a gem that I consider one of my favourites. Whether you want to giggle, sob, or do both, this show is wonderful.
