I. LOVE. Fooly Cooly.
Though my love for it wasn’t immediate, similar to most I didn’t understand it after my first watch and foolishly shrugged it off as nonsense, however I always felt drawn back to the series. I watched a few youtube analysis videos to help me understand what was truly happening and to get a better grip, Namely “mothers basement”, and “Hiding in public” on youtube. And I firmly believe they can help you understand the series and what the creators of Fooly Cooly intended for it to be too.
STORY: Fooly Cooly is as I said confusing, and honestly its story isn’t the most
...
intriguing, at least not for most. But if you devote some time to watching the short series, and make efforts to understand its meaning you can be blown away by what is actually being said. It is, at its heart, a coming of age story of a boy that has lost his only role model, so now he has to fend for himself all while being attacked by killer robots and manipulated by an alien women. Will he rise to the occasion and do what he must? 9/10
ART: Fooly Cooly has incredible art and animation for something released in 2000, don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t compare to other animes that we see now released by Mappa and Studio Wit, however it’s stunning for its time and for that it deserves some respect. 10/10
SOUND: Probably its best quality is its sound track and music. its an upbeat theme made by a Japanese rock back called “The Pillows”, and I often find myself listening to their music while I do other tasks, anyone who is a fan of anime, or soft rock should give their band a try. (And of course Fooly Cooly too) 10/10
CHARACTER: Another thing Fooly Cooly does great is its characters, some of them are selfish, and manipulative, but why would characters be perfect? Us as real humans definitely aren’t. all major characters are given their spotlight in the show and I never felt like the show needed to do more or less. Also the variety, while they do follow a common theme I definitely didn’t feel like they were just copies of each other, and each character arc felt original, something I hadn’t witnessed before in other anime titles. 10/10
ENJOYMENT: Personally I find myself rewatching the show often, more than i probably should be, with a total of around 10 rewatches in total this show definitely is worth every second you spend watching it, after all, its only 6 episodes. 10/10
OVERALL: Overall I love this show, I genuinely think the only mistake they ever made was allowing the abomination that was season 2 to exist (Season 3 is better than season 2 in my not so professional opinion.) Thank you for reading this and if you haven’t already please give Fooly Cooly a chance, you’re only hurting yourself by not. And if you suffer from conflicted feelings about the show don’t be afraid to watch some analysis videos, they saved the show for me so they could do the same for you. Bye!
