Ironically just like Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk Edgerunners is way too ambitious. They try so much stuff just to basically drop it immediately or barely actually go anywhere with it.
It's a super fun watch, and you'll probably binge it all the way, but at the end, you'll be left blue balled. They really try to make you care about the characters, but with it being about 90% focused on pure fun and action, only maybe 10% of it is left for you to get invested in the characters and world, that's especially disappointing cause well the show is only 10 episodes.
This could've been a masterpiece,
...
if it would've at least been 24 episodes. Honestly though, even with 24 episodes I still think that's not enough to flesh everything out. They'll be skipping from action to action basically ignoring all the character development, and instead of seeing them change for ourselves they'll just change in an instant without us seeing it. They'll often basically just ditch the entire personality of a character and completely change it in a few seconds after skipping through some time. Maybe there was development there but well, we'll never see it, so we won't ever really know.
The world building is fantastic, even though there's not much of it cause they're trying to do a glitchless any% speedrun of the anime. I really wish we'll get to see more of this world in anime form, Cd Projekt Red have obviously build a fucking incredible world, just sadly they didn't show it's full potential in this anime.
Even though the characters do feel shallow, they're still just a blast to watch. They're all super quirky and it's hard to not love them all, it is hard for you to care though with how little development they get, and with how little time we have to get attached to them.
All the emotional bits just felt somewhat lifeless. It's something you've seen 100 times already in every generic netflix show, where they'll slowly pan out showing for example 2 characters kissing and some "emotional" pop music is playing in the background, basically just gaslighting us into actually caring, and after giving us like a few seconds to process it they'll just fucking ignore it completely, which makes it feel really anticlimactic.
Even though It may seem like I'm completely shitting on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, I still think it's a fantastic show. If you're looking for just pure turn your brain off fun, this is the show you're looking for. If you're looking to get actually invested in the characters, plot, lore etc. etc. I'd say you should put your eyes on something else.
