tl;dr bad story saved by great animation

DISCLAIMER: I did not know that this was based on a game before watching this. There is probably a lot of background knowledge I don't have that would have made this a better film to watch.

The movie starts with a really strong opening. 1st there's some exposition on the setting which is kind of boring but needed but then it goes straight into an action scene where you see what is essentially the apocolypse. After this strong opening it then goes straight onto introducing the main protagonist of the movie. It does this all in a way that feels ... natural and the pacing flows well.

I will avoid spoilers here but from here on out the pacing changes in a janky and inconsitent way. It goes from really slow scenes to ramping up the speed to where it can be a little difficult to keep then going right back down to moving like a turtle.

I won't give a direct spoiler for the ending however if you do want to watch this film you may want to skip the rest of this paragraph. The ending is probably the worst "power of friendship endings" since soul eater and that's pretty impressive considering soul eater had high school kids beat a villain that literally god couldn't.

The saving grace of this movie is literally everything else. The animation is stunning, the CGI fits in well (that's right actual good use of CGI in an anime deserves a watch just for that). The music was well done, voice actors did a great job.

in conclusion if you watch this don't expect much from the story but you will enjoy every other aspect.

tl:dr if you want to watch an echi harem anime with an op protagonist watch peter grill or interspecies reviewers, at least they have the decency to actually show the reason you came to the anime.

This is lowest score I have ever given to an anime's story. The opening explains that he has the ability to gain the answers to ANY question he has by asking the great sage, even questions that might seem impossible to gain the answers to. However he doesn't use this power because it gives him migraines. "Well if that's the case why doesn't he just ask the great sage how ... to get rid of his migraines?" you might ask. That question really is the 1st sign of why this show is so terrible, the entire plot of it revolves around a bland MC with no personality or individuality accumulating overpowered ability after overpowered ability and then never using them correctly because he is fundamentally a smooth brain.

This isn't the only problem though as he never makes a good decision by himself, everything is always a suggestion from someone else. He is like a disposable bag being carried away by the wind which is truly a fitting metaphor because he is trash.

There is truly no reason to recommend this anime as everything it does is done better by another anime. The genres listed are Action, Adventure, Harem, Ecchi, and Fantasy. Peter Grill has better action and adventure in it, a better harem and the ecchi scenes are more ecchi, not only this but in a fantasy world there seems to be a lack of fantasy races with the only one existing outside of the mobs the MC fights is a single elf.

I tend to watch the anime that twitter says don't watch and it brought me to goblin slayer and shield hero and even though neither were life changing I did enjoy them both quite a lot. As a result when twitter started saying anyone who like Uzaki chan is a pedo because she looks like a child I thought I would give it a go.

I came to the conclusion that they were wrong, Uzaki clearly looks like a 20 year old girl (her actual age in the show), I have met many girls that look her, far from unrealistic girls that look like her aren't ... even uncommon.

What they should have been saying is that anyone who likes Uzaki chan is a simp. Whilst I think on a base level there's nothing wrong with her trying to get her friend from school to leave his room more often and see the outside world, for a large portion of the anime her behaviour is straight up unacceptable.

I will admit that her helping him when he was sick and teaching him how to cook was decent on her part however moments like that are too few and far between to make up for all the stalking and harassing she does in innappropriate occassions. Especially the episode where they go into the forrest.

The supporting cast aren't much better, Uzaki's mother is the only 1 not trying to butt in their buisness. I feel like if it wasn't for the boomerang effect this anime wouldn't be rated as highly as it is.

Imagine if Germany made a world war 2 show/cartoon showing showing the Nazis as the good guys and the allies as faceless monsters. That is essentially what happens in this anime. In world war 2 Japan commited genocide and war crimes on the same scale as the Nazis (look up korean comfort women, the rape of nanjing, unit 731 for more details).

It shows the ships as cute anime girls that are trying to stop the monsters from attacking their homeland, completely glossing over that the war in the pacific was a war that Japan started and the huge amount of war crimes they were ... committing in the process.

Alternative history can be fun for a story telling device but this is not the way to go about it, the man in the high castle is a much better way of showing alternative history as they don't shy away from the genocide and somehow still manage to make a Nazi somewhat sympathetic.

Spoilers for the ending: The final battle is clearly meant to be a retelling of the battle at midway in which America defeated Japan in a naval battle so resoundingly, that the war was then unwinable for Japan at that point on. This battle happened in US territory as the Japanese were attacking but in the show is portrayed as the Japanese defending themselves and in the end they have the US lose. The entire anime just seems to be some kind of jingoistic wish fulfillment instead of an attempt to write a compelling story.

I am someone who used to climb, before we went into lockdown I fell while climbing and tore my ACL and miniscus in my right knee and have been pretty depressed since while I wait for surgery. I watched this anime when I heard about it in January and I really enjoyed it.

In terms of characterisation I found the only parts that weren't realistic were the way some of the characters try and sabotage the girl taking it up for the 1st time by either telling her not to take part or purposefully giving bad advice. Even in a competitive situation I have never come ... across people acting like that in climbing.

Secondly the way they show excersises being done, single leg squats are hard for people that are in shape, no way someone who has just started excersising could do them.

The final point I would make is everyone talking about the girls outfits being sexy, I guess as someone who has climbed a fair bit I didn't notice the outfits because that's just how people dress when they go climbing. I honestly didn't consider this anime to be particularly fan service filled as how else would you draw someone climbing?

Either way this anime has inspired me, if my surgery is successful I will start climbing again.
