Common sense is that Shigatsu is the best anime of the romance genre and its fame follows its quality.
I think the work is so good primarily because it managed to transcend the romance genre. In a common romance, the characters would have more corporeal intentions with passion, such as the desire to talk, to walk together, to cuddle and kiss, and would go through a script with a focus on achieving this. In shigatsu, the characters' intention is to try to be important in the life of the one they love, they want to do actions that inspire, help, comfort and cheer their loved ones.
...
Here you see few flirtations and no kisses but many demonstrations of consideration and feeling, this is taken to a point where halfway through the plot I thought that all the feelings there were Platonic loves, that every character had someone he considered important but that no one wanted to date nobody. In the end there are some declarations of love (in the connotation of a loving relationship), but the climate remains that there is a feeling deeper than the carnal.
Shigatsu was also right to get away from the worst clichés, which are the super silly protagonist, the helpless and dependent girl, and the antogonist bag as hell. In this anime the protagonist is very mature and sensible, the female characters have a strong personality, and those who were presented as antagonists are actually good friends of the protagonist.
Speaking of the characters, really everyone is charismatic and even those who don't have much development have a different personality. My personal opinion is that the best character was Tsubaki, because I loved seeing the mixture of emotions: envy; jealousy; passion; and kindly, that she expressed.
I can point out as negative point the exposure of the character Nagi for having expressed an inconvenient lolicon connotation, I don't think she is a bad or unnecessary character but they could have corrected some scenes so as not to romanticize a child so much. They could even maintain the passion she created for the protagonist (after all, in real life, a 13 year old child also falls in love) but in a more respectful way.
As for the technical aspects,
The animation -
it is always good, and although the focus is on the scenes playing instruments I liked the scenes of silence in which only the pose of the characters expressed their emotions, and of course the last epsode was beautiful to see.
The soundtrack -
it is good, but it is the minimum that is expected of an anime that is also of the musical genre.
The dubbing -
It's cool.
Opening and endning -
I liked the first opening much more than the second. I skipped all endnings.
Final consideration -
I don't recommend it to anyone! Shigatsu has the crown of the best romance with total origin, however I cannot recommend something that is so beautiful and when it ends it leaves you in a void and proportional longing. I cried a lot and left me with trauma. 10/10.
