Shamo is one series that is difficult to write a simple review for, but I'll try to keep it brief. I may as well get it out of the way - Shamo has one of the worst endings to a manga series that I've ever seen, There's no resolution, no ultimate lesson, just a strong feeling that the author wanted the series over and done with. I was a little skeptical about this one at first but I actually really enjoyed this one while it lasted.
I'm not sure why the author decided to end it so abruptly, but I found the story very endearing. As far as ecchi manga goes this one kept it fairly clean, not delving into anything too creepy or perverted. I think the "student wearing a costume to school" was an oddly interesting take on the angst of school life. I would have really liked if they had gone more into the who, why, where, and whatnot of the costume and developed the characters some more.

Death Note (Anime) add
If you were to ask me to list my top 10 favorite anime series of all time (excluding one-shot movies) then Death Note would definitely be on the list.
The story is very unique, especially considering the times this series came out in with loads of generic action/comedy shounen series popping out every couple months. It's decidedly dark, serious and mysterious tone immediately draws the viewer into the story.
Probably the best part of the story is the characters and the interactions between them. It's a very character driven narrative and with the way that each character develops as the story progresses, it really shines. The ...
