Well, I think once you give UBW a start it'll be pretty easy to stick to it. It's a lot better paced than the Fate route tbh

I'm not worried, i'm curious

TBH, the biggest problem I have with Lain is that it has some solid themes, has unique + profound concepts and ideas, but the show never tries to present those themes/ideas via any meaningful story or characterization. While watching Lain I basically felt as if the show was trying to hammer the weight of its themes into my head via tedious info-dumping all the time, in the process creating a mind-numbingly boring experience. HxH or Code Geass both have a immersive world, meaningful story and many memorable & intriguing characters to make the info-dumping enjoyable to some extent, while Lain has none of those. Code Geass especially has an astounding plot filled with so many jaw-dropping cliffhangers and plot-twists that it compels binge watching unlike any anime I've seen.

Well that's pretty much the big question with the series lol. On the surface it's about humans vs monsters, but the whole idea is you have to piece together what's really happening behind the scenes on your own (often this entails keeping an eye out for visual clues, e.g. things written on newspapers in the background). So I absolutely failed to do that.

Honestly the most avant-garde thing I've seen from Nasu is probably how nonlinearly Kara no Kyoukai movie 5 is told. I had to watch it twice to piece together the events properly (most people absolutely love that movie, but again it wasn't really my thing).

I mean, avant garde usually implies it's very unconventional. Like NGE has multiple instances of several-minute long still frames (e.g. this) to convey tension between the characters, and at one point a trippy mess of real footage starts playing out of nowhere
Sir-C Aug 31, 2:06 AM
Well avant garde generally means it's a new or unconventional method of story telling. Fate is presented pretty straightforwardly. You could make a case that Kara no Kyoukai is more experimental though

Nah, I usually throw more recommendations at them that they do. 😅 But I always try to give a little explanation for each of them
tinshard Aug 31, 1:59 AM
Why? I just said I'll put it on my list that's especially for those anime that somebody told me it's good. I keep them separate in a txt so I know who to tell when I complete them
tinshard Aug 31, 1:52 AM
Wow, that's fairy unusual, and at the same time interesting! Thanks for the heads up, I'll put it on my "recommended to me" list
Sir-C Aug 31, 1:10 AM
Experimental
Sir-C Aug 31, 1:05 AM
Well you're not wrong, that's pretty much what the climax of NGE is focused on. Unless you're into avant garde stuff, the only reason to watch NGE is just to see what all the discussion is about.
Sir-C Aug 31, 12:58 AM
I'm surprised, in that case you might like Evangelion (I definitely didn't, but maybe I'm in the minority).

Yeah 03's beginning is generally closer to the manga than FMAB. After around 10 episodes though it caught up and had to tell an original story, which I think worked out really well. Feels like the same characters as FMAB put in new situations
DigiCat Aug 30, 4:54 PM
It's actually funny AF and has really nice artstyle

Also i'm a straight woman, so yes i like hot dudes in my anime
