What an absolute atrocity of an interesting premise that turned into generic Shonen slop that only the most simple-minded individuals of the imbecilic variety can enjoy. A bit mean spirited, I know, but if you thought this deserved anything above a 5, you are the reason why people look down on anime fans, and why our opinions on media can't be taken seriously. This is coming from someone that ranked "Dunking on Succubi" highly, because at least that one is enjoyable despite it's flaws. This isn't enjoyable. All this is is just spectacle.
Now, lets get into the "why", and I'll start with what most

people rank highly -- music and animation
Music: Outside of the OP, nothing too exceptional to write about. Even with it, the OP has no substance to it. It's a decent song with some visuals that doesn't tell a story of it's own. Normally, these visuals along with the music should be able to tell you something about the show or movie that comes after. Marvel does this fairly well with it's MCU reel opening, just as an example. Again, with Kaiju, it's just spectacle. "OMG IT'S YUNGBLUD AND IT'S PRETTY!" doesn't make for a good opening. Another show this season, Lvl 2, has a very simple opening where the entire point is to express just how much the wife loves her husband. That has substance compared to this opening, and that show isn't great. Outside of the OP, nothing about the score stood out to me. To compare to another show this season, 7th Prince, that score is fairly memorable. When a scene happens and the music kicks in, you notice it, and it suits the scene very well. With Kaiju, nothing comes to mind in that aspect.
Welp, not a great start to what most people rank highly.
Animation: Pretty good. A few bad frames here and there, but the animation does flow well for the most part. However, even the animation falls under the Shonen tropes. Fast running with close-up, jumps that might as well be teleportation, background characters that seem like they aren't alive, sword swings that don't line up with the amount of slashes but at least it's pretty lights, things like that. Overall though, pretty good, not much to say outside of all that. Can't really say that about the...
Art and Design: Not really great. Just generic anime art. Important characters have their faces shown all the time with weird colored hair so you can tell them apart. Background characters all have masks on for whatever reason. No reason. It bothers me so much that they wear full face masks while the main cast wears half masks. Why? What's the point of this? The point is further lost when it seems like at every moment the main cast will take off their masks. You'd think everyone would either have half masks or no masks at all, which is especially important considering they use guns. Masks makes it VERY hard to aim down sights, and should only be used in a scenario where it's actually needed. The Kaiju are decently designed though, so that's something at least, even if you can mainly describe them as "humanoid monster".
Story/Plot: Oh boy, where to begin. I enjoyed the beginning, where Kafka was a clean up dude. I thought it would be very interesting how this middle aged clean up dude got powers, and I was interested to see where they'd take it. Unfortunately, after 12 times of failing, somehow he makes it into the defense force. Somehow, despite having 0 power, he doesn't get kicked out. Nah, he makes it through. BUT he uses his clean up knowledge to help! That has to count for something, right? Sure, for the first fight, then it doesn't mean anything cause it's never brought up again. Another interesting concept thrown to the side, great. Oh, lets also talk about the fights. You wanna see how someone figures out his new powers, see how he can have this double life as human and Kaiju supporting his squad mates? Well, too bad. MC is constantly thrown to the side so they can show off the side characters. If you were to just take the MC and compile only his fights, you MIGHT get a 10 minute compilation. That's ridiculous. The show is called "Kaiju No. 8", yet we rarely actually see him. When he finally shows up, 2 minutes. That's the most of the fight you'll get before it's over. I'll save the rest for the character section. Now, do you like flashbacks? I sure hope you do, cause this series loves to waste your time with them. It should be a good thing to show the motivation for the various characters, but it does a very poor job at doing so. It's just filler. None of the flashbacks do much to connect you with the characters. All they do is aggravate you since it's just filling out run time. I want to expand on the various plot points, but there really isn't anything important happening until the end when MC lets himself get captured, and even with that they fumble. What was their plan in the finale? Did they not understand that, if it would've failed, they would've lost an entire building, lose all of their top brass, as well as let loose one of the strongest Kaiju they've seen? Oh, and we find out that the main baddie Kaiju is getting stronger. The main baddie Kaiju, that should've died but didn't because MC wasted time for no reason other than the plot needed main baddie to survive. That's nice. As far as other plot points, writing this, it's hard to even remember what happens in this show. Everything is so forgettable. Again, just spectacle with absolutely no substance. Watch and forget.
Characters: Continuing where I left off, Kafka is the MC in the loosest way possible. He's rarely in his own show, but that's besides the point, let's talk about the actual character. Not much to say since he doesn't really have any character. The show ignores him so much that it's impossible for him to actually grow as one. So if that's the case, what about the side characters? Well, you have White Hair, Yellow Hair, Red Hair, Purple Hair, Female Childhood Friend...that's all I can remember. Man, those flashbacks sure did help in making me remember the characters. Yellow Hair is a typical stuck up rich tsundere that becomes friends with MC and White Hair. The show loves her, and she has some sort of semblance of character growth since she does become semi-humbled early on. That's about as far as she goes though. White Hair is the sidekick of MC, and he's just there to worry about the MC. Red Hair I only remember because of the hair. Purple Hair is the vice-captain of the squad, has squinty eyes, super strong, and there so we can go "omg is he gonna figure out MC's secret?!" Female Childhood Friend has no character, she's just strong and the main motivation for the MC. Really great characters, right?
That's all I got. The only reason why this review exists is because y'all have no taste and ranked it so high. At least y'all didn't waste my time as much as this show has, and with this now written, I can forget about this show completely. Good thing that it's already fairly forgettable. With that said, I'm gonna go watch Ranking of Kings. 10 episodes in and they've already done so much more than this show has in 12, and that show actually respects the time of it's viewer.

I really don't feel like the previous reviews are giving this a fair shot. I've read a lot of manga, I've read a lot of trash, I've read a lot of isekai. With the last part of that, this is one of the better ones I've read. The world building in this is pretty thorough compared to many others, where the author does a good job at making the world feel alive and moving outside of our main party. The story is fairly simple overall, but again, the world building and plot within the story does a good job at fleshing out that simplicity. At

Suspension of Disbelief to the max level
Quick emotional thoughts: I feel like people are giving this manga too much credit. The premise is really interesting and it's what got me hooked onto it, but about halfway it just got way too silly. Things started to just happen for no reason with no explanation, and I wish I could give examples on here but it would be spoilers for those that want to read it. It's a real shame too, since last night I went to bed excited to read more, only for this time I'm going to bed annoyed at how it became. Now with ... Dec 18, 2022

Welp, this is an interesting one to say the least.
I don't think I've ever read a manga that is so "meh". Not bad, not good, but so in-between and safe that it's almost criminal. To get into it (spoilers ahead), as the summary says, the MC and two others get transported to another world. One is a Hero, the other is a Wizard, and MC is a Priest. However, despite the King explicitly stating that he wants to see their statuses (since this world is basically a game), he doesn't find out that MC is a priest and believe MC blindly when he states that ... First things first, other reviewers keep hounding that this is an isekai, and while yes, "technically" this is an isekai, but outside of the first few pages the fact that the MC got reincarnated bares no impact on the story. It never comes up again when we catch up to the MC at age 10. So keep that in mind if you're thinking of checking this out but turned off by the idea of reading another isekai.
Getting into it, the main appeal of this manga is the art. While a lot of it does come off as basic/childish, when the action kicks in it ... |
