I at first didn't understand why people disliked Sun Ken Rock after finishing the manga. But now seeing so, I can understand why.
The first time I encountered Sun Ken Rock was a screenshot. Astonished by the beauty of the art, I rushed to read the first chapter, and I was disappointed. I expected the manga to be serious story, rather than just a gag. I dropped it thinking it was not worth it. But seeing how lot of people appreciated Tae-soo Park,, and still fantasized by Boichi's art, I thought of just giving it a try, and I regretted dropping it.

I do agree the story was not quite appealing, but I believe this movie was quite creative and very ambitious. The original source is a novel by Osamu Dazai. A story about a man named Oba Yozo, a man that had lived a life of misery and was brought to ruins. The reality about the novel is that the entire story was basically Osamu Dazai's autobiography. His consciousness struggling to cope up with despair and questioning his own human self. The anime uses this story and twists it into a different setting.
