Honestly, after the first episode I was going to drop it. Even though nothing happened with those aliens I was really uncomfortable with it. But I decided to do the whole "three episode" rule and it's actually a really fun watch! What surprised me the most is how sad episode 7 made me! Actual masterpiece of an episode! I can tell why the manga readers were freaking out about this despite what almost happened (and did happen) in the first episode.
With that said, the anime is still obsessed with genitalia and it's really hard to recommend it to people who might be more bothered by

This is easily the best Junji Ito adaption. Unfortunately that wasn't exactly a high bar to reach, and it didn't reach that far above the others.
There are three volumes of Uzumaki, all about 6 or 7 chapters long. (Minus the "lost" chapter.) Imagine trying to fit about twenty chapters inside of four episode anime with inconsistent runtimes. It would've been better if they just cut some chapters out then try to fit an entire chapter within a few minutes. Without spoiling anything, this is how the anime adapted the manga: Episode 1: Chapter 1, barely any of chapter 2, all of 3, and the beginning of chapter ...

The original FLCL remains as one of my favorite anime of all time even after 20 years. I also enjoyed Progressive and Alternative quite a bit. I was wondering if the music had an influence on my opinion on them but I do genuinely really like the characters for those two and after watching this I know for sure that it wasn't just the music.
The one point I'm giving this anime is from the first episode and the music alone. The first episode was decent. I rated the anime 6/10 after seeing it and then it got worse. Way worse. It attempted to be a reboot ... |
