One of the most important things when writing a story is to know how and when to end it. And that appears to be something the author of Kanojo Okarishimasu, Reiji Miyajima, either doesn't know or doesn't care about.
At first I was enjoying reading the manga, especially the movie arc that was undoubtedly the best part of it (which probably everyone reading this can attest to). During the movie arc, we got at least some character development of the male MC who starts off as a loser who lies to his grandma pretending his rental girlfriend is his actual girlfriend.
During the arc, we
...
saw Kazuya being dedicated to helping Chizuru achieving her dream of becoming an actress by helping creating a movie for her where she could star. This took about 50 chapters because Reiji just couldn't help himself and had to keep prolonging it as much as he could. That being said, it was still the most enjoyable part of the manga. Besides Kazuya becoming less of a loser, we also could clearly sense that his relationship with Chizuru had become more than just a rental girlfriend and a client. It was evident she really appreciated what he did for her and well, he truly did something.
So what went wrong? Well, instead of ending the manga here (which would've been the best decision imo), Reiji decided it was not going to be the end.
And now after 90 more chapters (and still counting), everything that happened during the movie arc has become irrelevant, all character development was thrown into trash. The story is now being dragged out in such manner that it's just frustrating to read. Every now and then Reiji baits us into thinking something big is going to happen and then, of course, nothing happens. I think all readers who still haven't dropped this can agree that they don't expect anything anymore, because whenever there is a scene that makes it seem like something is going to happen, it's always purposely ruined by either one of the characters being afraid of saying what they truly want to say and ending up not saying anything, or by some of the other characters coincidentally barging in.
And like I mentioned throwing character development into trash, what has happened to Kazuya and Chizuru is truly catastrophic. Yes, Kazuya was supposed to be a loser right at the beginning, but he got a bit better during the movie arc. What has become of him is however twenty times worse. Chizuru in the meantime has become an obnoxious annoying bitch.
After the most recent "The Girlfriend and Paradise" arc which was stretched on 43 chapters, I don't think anyone can still take this manga seriously. The pinnacle of it was chapter 218 where we had to read through 9 pages of Kazuya imagining Chizuru having sex with another guy (Umi) and getting a visible erection from it. From this point it was clear that the manga has sunk so low that nothing could save it.
Even though something happened during the arc, it probably doesn't even matter because Chizuru still needs to "think about her feelings" which will probably take another 200 chapters.
What made her even more hated than before though was the fact that she (minor spoiler) ghosted Kazuya for three months, eventually allowing him to see her on a rental date where he had to pay 29 000 yen even though they're literally neighbors and they could reach each other in two steps. And Kazuya after being totally shattered by the fact that she ghosted him, becomes full of energy and happiness because well, at least she doesn't hate him! His reaction was similar to a drug addict who gets his hands on a drug after three months of abstinence.
The relationship between Kazuya and Chizuru has become so unhealthy that it would be way better for Kazuya to just cut her off and try to find a different girl. For example there is still Sumi who showed interest in him and their relationship would most likely be way healthier.
I'm rating this 6/10 for now, because I admit that I used to enjoy reading it, but it has been becoming more and more difficult. If the first few chapters entertain you, read it until the movie arc and afterwards stop, because you won't gain anything from continuing.
I don't know how many chapters we're going to have until it finally ends, but when it happens, probably no one will be enthusiastic about it. It will be just "fuck, it's finally over."
