A lot of people view this spinoff only as character development of the supporting cast to make the mains series more fulfilling. For me, it's been exactly the opposite!
Good slice of life comedies are so hard to come by these days, and a lot of them are arranged as skits that prevent you from really getting attached to the characters. But in Slime Diaries, the main series has already established that these are characters with backstories and stakes, and so I can really enjoy seeing them just exist day to day. The sense of humor is spot on, which I feel like can also

be hit or miss in other series like this. All the voice actors seem to really be giving it their all as well.
Also, the art is so much better in this spinoff than the main series. Instead of a low contrast colorgrade with unmotivated direction and CGI Magic glyphs, the art here is vibrant and actually works hard to immerse you in the environment. And the few action scenes are super fun because the direction is so creative in order to incorporate comedy rather than the generic choreo of the main series. This series has more sakuga than the last few seasons of the main line show! The characters are drawn to better portray personality and expression, and we actually get to appreciate how beautiful the fantasy world here can be.
And so the ironic part to me is that if I wasn't a fan of the main series, I definitely wouldn't enjoy this series as much. The main plotline gives me characters that I care about and a fantasy world I am familiar with. But this show bring brings the Slime franchise from something that I like to something i really love.
Anyways, if you don't like slice of life or comedy you definitely aren't going to like this. I feel like the main series attracts mainstream isekai shounen fans a lot which might not vibe with this genre. But for my friends that are receptive, I've actually reccommended that they just skip the main series and watch this show as a standalone- something I would have never expected! I hope so much they continue this spinoff, so I can watch it side by side with the main series. This is the most I've enjoyed isekai in a long time!
