Sekine is about a man discovering himself and meeting others. Machida is a high schooler and seeing the people he interacts with. I'd consider Sekine to be a more mature, adult version of Machida, and Machida to be pretty much peak wholesomeness and small life lessons. Different stories and atmosphere but similar vibes

Both are extremely wholesome and you can't help but support the main cast. Really nice feel good series about the protagonist meeting others creating little influences and life lessons to each other's lives.

Comfy, light-hearted, loveable characters, close group of friends. Most importantly, FOOD. Great food. And cute shots of people eating food

These are stories about powerful individuals who just want to live their lives and find a place to belong. Spice & Wolf tells the story of a merchant and a wolf god searching for her home. Beyond Light tells the story of a town girl who died and became a substitute for a saint who lost her life in the Royal Capital. While Spice & Wolf centers more on their adventure and slow romance, Beyond Light is very much a personal story about Yuna's redemption and the twisted life of the saint. While their stories may not be very similar, both gave me the same feeling reading them and could not put the book down. Both novels are very well-written. If you liked one, read the other. If you didn't, then still read the other. They are both translated fully to English and if nothing else please check out at least 1 volume. It's well worth your time Characters: Holo and Celia/Yuna are both revered as gods (Holo more literally) in their world. Both are strong female characters with great wit and drive. Lawrence is somewhat similar to Asyut who are both righteous people and want to help others though their personalities couldn't be more different. Beyond Light has a wider cast of both male and female characters while Spice & Wolf is very much so about only Holo and Lawrence but have some great side characters Setting: Both are set in a fantasy, medieval type world without any magic aside from old gods in Spice & Wolf and the Saint in Beyond Light. Both have a powerful religious body (and for Beyond Light, the royal faction too) who are at odds with our protagonists Genre: They are both fantasy, adventure and romance novels. The adventure aspect of Spice & Wolf is very literal while Beyond Light is an adventure to create a place for themselves within the city. Both have romance overtones and while the romance isn't exactly in the spotlight (eg shoujo romances) it is there and well written Both novels are very well-written. If you liked one, read the other.
