If I were to describe Haibane Renmei in 2 words, it would be Sensitive, and Beautiful. I say Sensitive, because that's what I was watching this. great writing, with a lot of "in your face" foreshadowing, which I do think fits naturally in a story like this. One of my few critiques with this show is characters like Hikari and Kana getting their own episodes then not getting much screen time past that. But other than that, everybody feels like a real person.
The animation was a little rough at the beginning, but, I only noticed this in certain scenes, which sorta broke my emersion. But,
...
Perhaps I got used to this, the further I got in. For what Haibane is, the animation is overshadowed by the art direction and painting. I absolutely love the vintage look, and the colors. I feel A lot of newer anime nowadays would benefit from avoiding the super colorful look.
The music brought the whole show together, with a beautifully played violin they played into the lighthearted scenes as well as the drama. And, even some music akin to Serial Experiments Lain, very eerie, but beautiful.
overall, I found Haibane Renmei to be very thought provoking, and personal to the viewer. I honestly think this show changed my life.
I recommend it 8/10
