Two pilots for Ashita no Joe. They set up the main plot points and lead characters along with displaying a future boxing scene that really shows the theme of this show well. I got into this series from Megalo Box, and I can see why that show was so good. The foundation for it are found in Ashita no Joe, and it's great boxing narrative. I can also appreciate the apparent upgrade in quality from the pilots into the show, and the art holds up surprisingly well for today's standards. I also wonder if Joe inspired Jotaro from JoeJoe's, because they have the same weird ... hat hair thing.

What is The Big O? Is is a episodic robot action show featuring villains and monsters alike? Is it a show contemplating the effects on a population if their memories were completely wiped? Is it a take on the view of God and how humans are just puppets part of a grand play? Or is it about the intense fear and disgust of tomatoes? If you answered yes to all of the questions, you would be correct. Who would have thought a show that on the surface looks and feels like a homage to batman, could be actually about many other deeper topics; like if ... androids have rights, or do memories define who we are or do we define our memories? This show has a great cast of characters and I'm still surprised about the fact that cartoon network was involved. Has to be one of the greatest animated shows from cartoon network, and I wished I could've watched this as a kid. I'd say the weakest point to this show was it's ending, even if thought provoking, it didn't explain everything to it's end, as some points have been left for the viewer to think about. All in all, I'd recommend anyone remotely interested in the batman motif or mech shows to give this a watch.

This is a strange Toei film. Dealing with loss of family and addiction to soda seems to be the points of this film, and I'm not joking. The movie switches focal points of the plot from a giant robot terrorizing the city, to a revenge plot on an ever escalating scale. Some points of this movie range from good such as showing familial love to an adopted child, to bad as the children towards the end of the movie seemingly embrace suicide as an attempt to stop the enemy, when an escape pod was ready and available the entire time. Overall, this movie is a ... good watch just to see what an adventure movie from Toei would be like back before anime exploded into what we know today.

Decent short introducing the main cast of the Lupin series, a good way to start a series. Characters were interesting enough to warrant watching further by themselves, not taking into account the great animation for the time. Enjoyed the fact that Lupin is basically the world's smartest monkey as well. Overall, since this is a short being only 12 minutes, there isn't much to take in, which I guess is one of it's flaws. The fact that the series started in color in great, as other series remained in black and white at the time of this pilot. Time to dive into the rest of ... the series!

Anime Review #1: Dai Guard
Even a salary man can save the world. This sentence does well to sum up the general storyline of Dai Guard. Imagine a show like the Office but with no comedy and every episode has a new monster to fight. On the surface this may seem bland and boring, but it actually is refreshing to see a show tackle the real world elements of having a giant robot fighting to save you. Other mech shows tend to gloss over the logistics of things such as insurance and property damage. But in Dai Guard there is a constant pressure on the pilots ... to not only win, but to do so with as little damage done to the city as possible. Corporate power struggles along with an ideal that true justice is saving people vs. fighting the enemy holds together the tense moments of the show when the main characters are not having to fight off each new threat. Some deep psychological theories and ideas are presented as well, and through these some characters display growth, which greatly helps fight against the episodic nature that this show has. Science also has a backing with the story, with characters learning about ways to manipulate energy and some real world concepts that they use to fight effectively. Very minor romance scenes in this show, so if you like more concrete romance stories, this is not the show for that. Overall I'd say this show is great to watch if you are older and can put yourself in the mindset of an average worker trying to deal with the problems of a daily job, along with the mech fights of course.
