This show is okay, but does not compare favorably to the earlier version. If you're thinking about watching both, watch this one first, otherwise you'll be disappointed.
The excessive CGI was very distracting. The artwork lacks the character of the original, the characters look very generic. It's also a lot more colorful, which made it look "cartoonish" to me.
The episodes themselves leaned toward "cute" rather than the more dark and philosophic stories of the original. Some of them are just short vignettes, and in many of them Kino doesn't even appear. As a whole, it feels rather dumbed-down, fluffy entertainment instead of engaging and
...
though-provoking.
I don't think watching it was a waste of time, but it will probably sit on the shelf for a long time before I watch it again.

I had this rated as a 7 at first, then it dropped to 5, but the last two or three episodes brought it back up to a 6. Miriai Nikki isn't the worst show I've watched, but it's far from the best. Starts off okay, but towards the middle there are massive plot holes and things that don't make any sense. Characters that are determined to kill each other repeatedly and inexplicably don't even when they have the opportunity. A policeman going out to stop armed killers all by himself. A schoolgirl taking out an armed and armored
...
SWAT team, and more.
The hero of the story is weak and indecisive. We get that, right away, and then we get reminded of it so much that I honestly started hoping one of the bad guys would kill him. But every time they had the chance, they suddenly didn't.
The writers should have spent more time fixing the plot. The show has a good theme, but it's poorly executed. If you can get through the middle episodes, the end is worth watching. I also found the opening theme music really annoying. If you want a song in English, find someone who can speak the language to sing it for gosh sakes.

The first thing to keep in mind about this show is that it's parody. It's only four episodes, so if you're into lengthy character background and development, you'll be disappointed. The characters are all caricatures of anime stereotypes. The heroine is an over-the-top warrior, feared by friend and foe alike, who generally does more collateral damage to the real estate than she does to her targets. Her wishy-washy love interest is about helpless, the teacher is an unabashed pervert, and the main antagonist is an exaggerated megalomaniac. So this is not a serious drama show.
I liked the details that the
...
writers introduced, stuff that other shows conveniently overlook. When there's a fight that destroys a school building, the next day everyone is sitting at their desk in the ruins (and without air conditioning). In Bleach, the good guy delivers a five-minute soliloquy in the middle of a fight, and the monster just hangs out in the background flapping its wings. In CCG, when the bad guy launches into a speech, Hazumi finds a more productive use of her time.
Oh and by the way the guy she loves and wants to marry is her brother. Sorta.
A little easier to follow than Furi Kuri and Puni Puni Poemi, this is a fun show, if you want over-the-top action, humor, and just a touch of fan service. Just don't try to take it too seriously.

I'm not comparing this show to anything except other anime that I've watched.
I just dug this out of my library and watched it again. It wasn't as good as I originally thought. The artwork is dated, but that's not a sin for an older show. The main problem is that whoever wrote the show didn't seem to have a good idea about where they were going. It starts off with violence, then turns into some kind of romantic high-school love triangle, then goes back into "find the bad guy and kill him" thing, then just sort of trails
...
off into nothing.
There is so much character development and background story that was never done. The heroine has been alive for 800 years. Every once in a while she wakes up, kills the bad guy and then goes back to sleep. Now for the first time she's developed a relationship with a human, and she acts like a teenage girl. At one point we find out that she makes money posing (naked, I assumed). Not really the behavior we expect from someone who was a princess.
People get "killed" and then magically heal - except they're still wounded. Except sometimes, apparently, they don't heal and death is permanent. It's very inconsistent and poorly explained. And when someone keels over, the primary first aid measure is to hold them and yell their name.
Shiki, the hero, has a secret past. But we don't find out about it until the show is almost over, and it doesn't seem to make any difference in the story. Was his father a good guy or a bad guy? Did Dad have an idea of what was going to happen? We don't ever learn. The maids seem to know what's going on but don't offer us any clues. They state that only Shiki can save his sister. From what? How? It never gets addressed again. His sister says she will not let the bad guy hurt Shiki. How? Does she have some kind of power? We never find out, and the rest of the show is full of similar loose ends. Shiki wants to be an ordinary guy, and there's an ordinary girl who likes him. Then he ends up sleeping with Arcuied. You would think he would be conflicted about that, but again, nothing.
Tsukihime could probably have been 24 episodes if they had taken the time to explore the characters, give more hints about their past and build up to a climax. Instead we waste a lot of time watching Shiki and Arcuied wander around town on dates when they're supposed to be hunting vampires. If you can get through the first few episodes, the last three are worth watching, but overall there's better things to do with your time. Watch Blood+ if you haven't already seen it.
