THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS. For instance, this movie is boring. There, you have now experienced this movie. No need to read any further. Unless you are some kind of masochist. Oh, who am I kidding I'm watching Biohazard: Damnation later this month, so I guess I'm some kind of masochist.
Story 5/10
I mean, the plot works for what it is. It's a Resident Evil/Biohazard plot. Cool. It's a shame that all the action takes place either at the beginning or the end of the movie. I've seen a lot of exposition. I've watched countless scenes of people talking in a cafe, but man I have
...
never watched a movie with so much exposition just lumped right into the 2nd act. I came to watch Leon kick ass, not to watch Leon talk to some asshole Senator. The first part of the movie that takes place in the airport is good. It's a classic Resident Evil/Biohazard patient zero scenario. The end of the movie is good. It's a classic find the hidden lab and escape with the evidence scenario. The middle of the movie is like one giant cutscene. Imagine if in Resident Evil 4, Leon had every conversation with Luis Sera in a single cutscene. That's essentially the 2nd act of this film.
Art 7/10
It was good. Nothing too great about it, but that was probably intentional since they were going for a Resident Evil/Biohazard vibe.
Sound 7/10
Again, just good. Nothing really stands out. Gunfire feels real and makes you worry about zombies swarming the area. All the normal stuff. Music sucks, though. Typical for Resident Evil/Biohazard.
Character 6/10
I only cared about Leon and Claire. Everyone else could've died and I really just wouldn't have cared. Maybe it's because one of the characters has a backstory that's smack dab in the middle of the fucking boring ass 2nd act. It is really hard to connect with a character if you bore me to death. Oh and I saw the betrayal from the one dude coming. Come on, he looks like he's Wesker's long lost brother. The instant I saw him I thought "bad guy." The Senator was a pretty obvious red herring as well. Claire acts all fucking offended like she's never heard a politician speak off the record. They all talk like that asshole.
Enjoyment 5/10
The action is fun and exciting, but the 2nd act really kills it for me. If I wanted to watch cutscenes for 45 minutes , I'd just play Resident Evil/Biohazard 6. If they hadn't spent a third of the movie boring me to tears with information that should've been given to us in short bursts throughout the 2nd act (you know, like the games), this would've been more enjoyable.
Overall 5/10
Just play the games, if you want my honest opinion. This movie doesn't include anything that changes the universe in any tangible way. It's like Resident Evil/Biohazard 4 but with all the cutscenes mashed together into one act.
Don't make movies out of games. We see how that turned out with the Western Resident Evil movies. This movie is certainly more loyal to the games, but that only gets it so far. I had to pause this movie out of boredom to go eat a sandwich and watch YouTube. The movie was a chore. Just something I had to check off because I was already too far into it to turn back and take it off my challenge list.

Did you expect anything less than a 9 for this one considering Kill la Kill is one of my favorite shows?
Story 9/10
Most of the story was quite good. Simon has to grow to become a great leader alongside Kamina and Yoko. With each battle they have with the beastmen, the humans grow stronger and gain numbers, defeating seemingly impossible odds every step of the way. It's downright absurd, but it works because the show welcomes this absurdity, even making it a major part of the narrative. I was surprised at the outcome of nearly every fight, which made this show a riot.
Art 10/10
I was
...
going to give this a 9, but then I remembered that Yoko exists.
Sound 9/10
Good voice acting, good impact sounds. Most music was appropriate, though like Kill la Kill, it had a rap song in the background that grated at my ears when it played. "Fight the power," is now one of my least favorite phrases.
Character 10/10
Every major character was well-established, especially Kamina and Simon. There are only two characters I ever found myself disliking. I despise Leeron, though I see his purpose in the narrative. He is very flamboyant, which was admittedly funny at first. It wore off after 3 episodes and ended up annoying me the rest of the show. I hated Rossiu for a bit later in the show because he was a dictator, and also a dick. Other than that, I loved all the characters, even the minor ones like Jorgun and Balinbow. I especially liked Viral and even Lordgenome near the end of the show.
Enjoyment 10/10
If you watch for nothing else, watch for the mech fights. For me that was the best part of the show.
Overall 10/10
This is a must watch for some people. If you like shows like Kill la Kill, it is unlikely you will hate this show. If you hate shows like Kill la Kill, it's up in the air. I feel this show does a better job than Kill la Kill at just embracing the absurdity. This show blows through the roof, breaks the sound barrier, and then completes the first manned mission to Saturn. Hell of a show.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS (not that you should really care)
After watching this I want revenge on everyone that recommended this dumpster fire to me.
Story 4/10
It's a dime a dozen revenge story. There wasn't anything offensively awful, which lands it a 4. I like the idea of just making the guy a cold-blooded killer. That's about it. Everything else either barely manages to stand or falls flat on its face. I was fine up until the story relied almost exclusively on flashbacks to tell us the story, sometimes interrupting action scenes. Honestly, this would've been better without Afro having connections to that dojo place. His
...
connection to the dojo only serves as a plot device so he holds back against Jinno later. The chick he bangs in episode 2 also came from that dojo. That's it. The monks serve barely any purpose in the story; they just show up and fight Afro for some action. They have the very unclear motive of "becoming God," but fail to answer why they want to do that in the first place. I actually feel like this would've been better as a movie or a short, rather than a 5 episode series of pure boredom.
Art 7/10
The single thing that I actually cared about. It's a shame that none of the attacks in this show have any impact since most impacts are not shown on screen, and those that are aren't sword attacks, and given the name of the show you expect some sword on flesh action. The gore in this was enough to make me bear all 5 episodes, but you can bet your ass I won't give it a pass just on that.
Sound 3/10
The music is awful, and also inappropriate for most scenes it's placed in. The impact noises are mostly okay. The voice acting is good from Jackson, but average to piss poor for everyone else. It's hard to hate on Jackson here because he's one of my favorite actors. The voice for Jinno is actually the same guy who did the English voice for Sasuke Uchiha, which was admittedly entertaining, but failed to make his acting any better. Jinno would've been a convincing character despite not being developed if it weren't for his voice actor butchering every emotion Jinno is supposed to feel. The bad guys relied on having low register voices with a bit of a growl to sound evil, and that wasn't enough to convince me.
Character 1/10
I liked the guy that followed Afro around, but not enough to care when he died. He was supposed to be comic relief, but rarely ever succeeded in making me laugh. The only reason I liked him was because Jackson got to talk a lot. Everyone else blows. Afro's motivation is boring. Revenge just isn't a compelling motivation when there aren't any layers to it. I wanted to feel bad for Afro over his father's death, but since he got almost all of his friends killed and killed his master over this revenge, I ceased to care. I actually wanted Afro to die in the fight against Jinno. Speaking of Jinno, he sucks. He's barely developed and has an even worse motivation than Afro. Come on, he's getting revenge on the guy he lectured about choosing revenge. The show doesn't even attempt to address it, and I was waiting for Afro to call Jinno out on his hypocrisy, but of course he remains silent and defeats Jinno. The main villain of the series appears very little, only having more than 5 minutes of screen time in the very first scene and the last episode. That makes it difficult to give a shit about him collecting all the headbands. The monks are all boring, despite them each being designed differently to show that they are different. The guy that looks like Jabba the Cyborg Hutt is just some random fucker they put in there to explain why Jinno and that chick Afro banged survived the massacre. The dojo characters are all boring, especially Master, who exists only to give Afro an excuse to get his friends killed, and serve as a half-assed explanation of Afro's skills.
Enjoyment 3/10
I enjoyed most of the fight scenes. Everything else was either boring exposition, a flashback, or comic relief. They forgot about "show, don't tell" in this show. Every bit of information you need is told to you. There were parts where they show you something only to immediately explain it afterwards like you even needed an explanation. This show was just boring. They spent time establishing why Afro ordered fucking lemonade at a bar. How about you write a better story so this show isn't just some revenge quest?
Overall 3/10
Skip to the fight scenes. Everything else is boring. Afro Samurai is one of the worst experiences I've had as a viewer of any media.

This was interesting. I went into this very skeptical, after seeing comparisons to both Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul. Death Note being a show I love, and Tokyo Ghoul being a show I'm indifferent about. This combination seems unlikely. Death Note, while it uses the supernatural as a means of driving the story, focuses more on the mystery part than anything else. Tokyo Ghoul, on the other hand tries to get its characters into gore-filled fights as much as possible, with 99% of the fighting going on between characters that have supernatural powers, one way or the other. Strangely enough, I found myself enjoying this
...
show, both for the Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul elements.
Story 8/10
I'd really like to give this a 10, but I can find no justification for it. On the positive side, the story is well-paced, and despite the low 12 episodes, it explains most things pretty well. There was a certain bit of the story that I won't spoil that I felt was not explained all that well, which is why I gave this an 8. Let's just say that the bit of the story I'm talking about is integral to the show's entire plot, so it needs to be explained pretty well.
Art 10/10
Almost nothing in this show is ugly. I can remember thinking the tank-thing (I can't remember the name of it) in one of the early episodes being very obviously CG, but I didn't see anything else that was distracting. The characters all look great, with my favorite being Lily.
Sound 9/10
Same thing that I say whenever I give Sound a 9 or 10. Everything sounded natural and didn't pull you out of the experience. The minimalist opening was perfect for this kind of show, which I kind of wish Death Note had done in retrospect (to be fair this may have been the streaming platform I was using). Music was well-used for the most part. I did find that some scenes would have been much better silent. Specifically scenes where Keith was making some L-esque grand discovery.
Character 8/10
Aside from the Market Maker characters, everyone was established well. I found it very difficult to care about any of the villain's motivations, aside from a villain I cannot name because of spoilers. Most of the villains are members of Market Maker, and those that aren't are throwaways. It felt like a lot of the motivations behind the actions of Market Maker were shoved into the last 3 or 4 episodes for the sake of a mystery, which made it very difficult to be invested in the endgame.
Enjoyment 9/10
The fight scenes are my favorite part of this show. It really reminded me a lot of the fights in Tokyo Ghoul, which I felt were pretty good. Those scenes in Tokyo Ghoul were the only thing that kept me watching. That isn't to say that the Death Note side of the show wasn't just as good. Keith not only makes a good L-type character, he is also good on his own. While he is a quirky detective, he has quirks all his own and a completely different motivation than L. Keith initially comes off as very impulsive, but as you watch you start to try to determine his motivation before the show tells you. For me the show was less about finding out whodunit, and more about finding out what was going on inside Keith's head, which was oddly pretty enjoyable.
Overall 9/10
While it threw me off at first, this show blends Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul pretty well. The two compliment each other, with long explanations by Keith followed by an action sequence or a fight scene, and action leading to new discoveries by Keith. This cycle does the show a great service. It keeps you invested in both sides of the show. Even when the exciting conclusion of a fight scene comes, you're anticipating another scene where Keith explains things to the mongoloids of the RIS. I can't say it was perfect, though. If you pay enough attention you can guess bigger parts of the show before they happen. I'm not talking about guessing who an insignificant side-villain is, I'm talking big spoilers here. Maybe that's what they were going for, but for me it was kind of a let down to know what was going on 3 episodes before it happened.
You'll probably like this if you liked the first season of Death Note and parts of Tokyo Ghoul.

Finally finished this one after my 3rd attempt.
Story 9/10
I want to be very clear that I only gave this a 9 because I felt there were moments (few and far between) that could've been explained better. It took me 3 watches to understand just the first episode. I found myself wondering if I should watch later episodes to get a better grasp of how the time travel thing works. I am so glad I didn't in retrospect, though. Otherwise, the story was amazing. The way this show handled time travel was beyond any other show, movie, game, et cetera I had seen on the
...
subject. Everything is so well thought out that it's believable that this is how time travel would actually work if it was ever accomplished. I can't say much more without going into spoilers.
Art 10/10
There's not a lot I want to say here. The show looks great. I like the attention to detail in some of the backgrounds. There's an episode where Daru goes on a crazy rant and one of the people in the background is actually turning to look at Daru. The characters all look great. My favorites being Makise Kurisu and Suzu (no last name cuz spoilers). Everyone looks the part, you can tell what kind of person Mayuri is just by looking at her.
Sound 9/10
The opening is great, background music sets the mood and is only there when it needs to be. Most sound effects are impactful and draw you into the show's world. There were a few sounds that made me laugh, but maybe that was the intended effect.
Character 10/10
Every important character, down to the least important of them, is developed and has conflicts they need to resolve. I actually struggle to pick who the least important character is, because everyone plays a pretty large part in the story at some point. While they all can be reduced to stereotypes, they each have personality traits outside of their base stereotype that distinguish them from characters like say, Kirito from Sword Art Online (who has about as much personality as a Build-A-Bear that's just a normal teddy bear). The characters combined with the excellent story really prove that this anime deserves the high praise it gets from nearly everyone in this community.
Enjoyment 10/10
This show has so many twists and turns it can be confusing to watch. Once you start getting later into the show, more is explained. I started to realize what was going on in earlier episodes as I watched. It breaks lengthy scientific explanations by Makise up with antics from the other characters to get you laughing and ready for another experiment. I was never bored by this show, even when the plot wasn't happening. I barely even noticed when the plot stopped moving because the characters were all so interesting to listen to.
Overall 10/10
This show had my interest from when I first started watching anime. I hadn't got around to finishing it until now. It was a wild ride, and I felt like I've been through a couple time travel trips myself, but it was a damn fun time. If you are getting into anime, this show is an absolute must watch.

We can get started with the elephant-sized breasts in the room. Obviously, this is an ecchi, but I feel it's better executed than most ecchi shows and I can really only put Kill la Kill above it, and that's only slightly. EDIT: I also rate Kill la Kill higher because I have an inherent bias to the show since it was one of the first anime I completed.
Story 7/10
While it could use some work, I think the story did a good job of keeping the show together. This is an action comedy, with high doses of ecchi in it. As such, the story doesn't
...
need to be above a 4 for this anime to get a rating of 7 overall, and for me it exceeds that by three points. Besides the obvious "plot" that we'll get to in the art portion, it is a very straightfoward story. Leave one shelter, find a better one, leave that shelter, find another. Pretty easy to shove all the action into the travel and leave segments, while putting the high school comedy aspects into the stay in one location and avoid detection segments. The show also does a good job of explaining why the characters who can fight, can fight. Save for Komuro, who is just there for the viewer to project themselves onto. Komuro is just brave and impulsive, that's it. Seeing that the target audience for this is males between 12-17, I can give it a pass on that. It has its flaws, like the fact that there is no source of this infection, but the story is serviceable enough for an action comedy.
Art 10/10
The art in this show is some of the best I've seen ever. Of course, Madhouse is responsible for this, so I really don't need to say much more. Even in the aformentioned "plot" scenes I can appreciate the beautiful artwork and time that the animators put into making Saeko's boobs jiggle. What? You thought I was giving it a 10 based solely on the beautifully done work by Madhouse? Give me a break, 80% of this show's selling point is the girls.
Sound 10/10
With the pleasant absence of any autotuned openings and endings, this show really nailed it with sound. Everything from characters hitting zombies with buses and humvees to firing guns was well done. Every time Hirano fired that sniper rifle I was anticipating the beautiful sound of a zombies head getting blown off. I don't really know where else to put this comment, so I'm putting it here. The voice acting was pretty stellar. I'll be up front and say I watched the sub, so I have no clue about what the dub sounds like. None of the characters had a hard time convincing me of who they were, even Komuro, who is supposed to be a blank slate for teenagers to project themselves onto. Komuro really seems to care what happens to everyone in the group, even the ones that don't have gigantic anime titties attached to them.
Character 8/10
As mentioned before, the characters that can fight have good reason to know how to fight. The ones that do not know how to fight stick back and help with other things. The nurse mostly drives vehicles, Takegi mostly yells at Hirano while also providing useful information because she's an unbearable know-it-all, and Alice (pats only you damn pervs) is cute and gives Hirano sniper rifle magazines occasionally. The only real complaint I have is they are really just a bunch of stereotypes. Well fleshed out, not boring sterotypes, but stereotypes nonetheless. Komuro is the template for teenagers to latch onto. Saeko is the femme fatale. Takegi is the obligatory harem tsundere. Rei is the chick that the three teenage girls watching can latch onto, and the chick that basic motherfuckers will pick as best girl. Alice is the loli. Hirano is the pathetic nerd character. They are much more fleshed out than this, but they aren't original. But again, this is an action comedy with a heaping pile of ecchi, this is completely forgivable.
Enjoyment 10/10
This is the real hook of the show. Sure, you can spend all day looking at the nurse's assets, but you can also watch Hirano blow zombies heads off, stare in awe as Saeko defeats half a horde with a wooden practice sword, and watch Komuro charge into battle like an idiot only to come out completely unscathed due to luck or help from friends (usually Saeko or Hirano). For what it is, Highschool of the Dead is a very enjoyable show. Even if you aren't into ecchi, you've got zombies dying left and right, a bit of teenage drama here and there, and even a psuedo-villan that does nothing for three-quarters of the show. I spent most of my time watching in awe, laughing, or calling Komuro a reckless idiot. It's a fun show.
Overall 9/10
I'm not giving it a 10 because of a certain reason I can't mention that brought the story down to a 7. If you're okay with ecchi, watch this show.

Where to start with this brilliant creation. It peaked my interest from the beginning with its first episode, which establishes Tanya and Serebryakov and introduces us to the concept of mages. I was already prepared for a 7/10 with this one. However, the next few episodes established even more of Tanya's character, and brought in commentary on religion and faith. The bulk of the show deals with military strategy, and ends with commentary on rationalism and human nature. I was not prepared for all of that. Tanya is a character that is despicable in every way, yet she has a strange charm about her that
...
makes me hope for her success. The way she is able to ensure her success makes you hope her plans will work. The same goes for the Empire as a whole, despite the fact that they seem to be portrayed as the bad guys. For me, there is no villain, everyone is just human to me. They live and die on their own merits, and that makes me love this anime. As much as I love a story with a concrete good and evil, this story is so much more interesting in that the only reason anyone in this anime is defeated or killed is their own mistakes and human flaws. No one is simply a bad guy that needs to be defeated, since we are following arguably the most important battalion in the Imperial Army. Each battle is a significant part of the story. I really enjoyed myself with this anime, and Tanya Degurechaff will likely be one of my favorite anime characters of this year, perhaps even decade.

I have never read the manga. I obviously need to do so. Apparently the development actually happens in the books, and isn't lazily thrown together by Studio Perriot. At least according to my friends that have read the manga. Anyway, I scored this a five. While I do find this show mediocre, it somehow kept me watching. If the gore did it, then I was blissfully unaware of that fact, especially since most of it was censored.... The main issue with this show is the characters. Kaneki is a whiny little bitch for most of the season, and doesn't develop much until the last few
...
episodes. It's good to have setup for character development, but not to the point where you dangle it in front of us like we're fat people on treadmills. Maybe that's what kept me watching. Maybe I wanted to see Kaneki turn into the badass that's splattered everywhere on the internet. Touka seemed interesting, especially for a tsundere, but I'll be damned if she didn't turn out to be the most generic example of a fucking tsundere ever. Oh, she's actually really nice, but she's abrasive because of currently unspecified family issues. That whole thing has been done a thousand times, but almost never right. Remember Senjougahara from the Monogatari series? That's exactly the right way to do it. The family issues were a mystery for quite some time, but we knew of the existence of all of the family, and could actually care when the problems are brought into the spotlight. In Touka's case, her brother is sprung on us, with virtually no warning, unless I missed some dialogue. This makes me hate his character, even though the show seems to want me to relate to him. Suddenly, we get a character that is the inverse of the CCG, and little has been done to explain why he hates humans so much, so I can't exactly relate to anything he does or says. Yet he manages to have moral discussions with other characters like I'm supposed to give a flying fuck about what he has to say. Senjougahara gets over her abrasiveness towards Araragi, and her insults become cheeky and playful. Meanwhile, Touka continues to insult Kaneki for most of the season, and simply hates him for being a wimp, not that I blame her. In Monogatari, the show is self-aware of the generic tsundere they created, and actually has another character, Oshino Meme, affectionately refer to Senjougahara as "Tsundere-chan." Not only does Tokyo Ghoul not do that, it seems proud of it. Touka gets a lot of screentime compared to other characters, and it's almost never entertaining. The other characters are all introduced at lightning speed, and it's like a barrage of things to start caring about.
That's enough about the idiotic decisions relating to the characters. Plot holes. Starting with the infamous teacup plot hole. Apparently, a kitchen knife cannot cut through Kaneki's skin, but broken glass can, somehow. Organ transplant, another infamous one. The doctor transplanting organs without the consent of next of kin is asinine; that puts everyone involved in the operation in the hotseat, and is far more dangerous than losing the biggest crybaby of all time. Mask nonsense. Ghouls that have been discovered by the CCG continue to wear masks, because they wouldn't look cool without them, even though those are probably inconvenient to breath in, and thus also annoying to move in. Tsukiyama bullshit. "I'm Kaneki, let's go have tea with this strange man that Touka told me to avoid. I also don't pick up on social cues, and thus I do not realize that this guy is totally fucking pedo and should be avoided at all costs." Oh, and this is all because they like the same author, which is the same reason he took Rize on that date, which got him into the situation he is currently in. Does your brain hurt from how mind-bogglingly stupid Kaneki is?
The art and sound were pretty good. It's a shame a lot of the art was gore, and was heavily censored.
Overall, I can say that there has been worse. Honestly, if they focused on developing characters instead of shoving all the content they possibly could into twelve episodes, Pierrot might be able to make a show that scores an 8/10 instead of a 5/10.

Having only seen two episodes, the characters intrigued me in the first episode, and I lost all interest in the second. I came into this anime knowing it would be filled with fanservice, and if my 9 score on Kill La Kill is any indication, I have no problem with fanservice. My problem comes when it becomes shameless. You write two very interesting characters dependent on each other only to turn the brother into a hopeless virgin that longs to get his dick wet. I get that the joke is that he can't get with his sister because incest, and she's like 12, but it
...
just wasn't funny to me. It came off as loli incest pandering, rather than any sort of comedy. The story's concept isn't bad, and the art and sound are definitely above par, but the characters just killed it for me. The princess came off as overbearing with her repeated "I'm bound by the Covenants to love this guy but I don't want to" joke. It was actually pretty funny the first time, but it had already gotten old by the second time and was basically unbearable for me. There's only so much you can do with a single joke, at it wore out the second time she began slamming her head against the wall in frustration. I love the opening song. It gave me hope for the show when I first heard it. I don't know, I just hated the characters.
EDIT: Oh, and feel free to take this with a grain of salt since I only just barely made it through two episodes. A lot of people follow the "three episode rule," but I find no value in that. Most anime that I hated on the first or second episode never turned out to be any good after three, but that's just me.

I love this anime. It is absolutely phenomenal. I cannot remember a single scene where it felt like I was having exposition dumped on me, though I'm sure there was. It kept you in the action, and the fanservice was weaved into the story seamlessly. Sorry, could not contain myself on the sewing jokes. Rather than bombarding me with awkward shots of the female form, like a few of my least favorite anime, it places the fanservice along with relevant bits of the story. One such example is Matoi looking up at Satsuki from the school grounds. Satsuki is relevant in the shot, showing her
...
immense power over both the school and Matoi, all while getting that desired upskirt. The art is beautiful, though if you pay attention long enough, Ryuko and Satsuki have a serious case of man-face. Just stare for a couple seconds and you'll see what I mean. The soundtrack is amazing, and I especially enjoyed the second OP by Garnidelia, Ambiguous. This one was a surprise to me. From what my friends told me about this anime, I thought it was going to be middle of the road, 6/10. I never thought it would be even in my top 10 anime, much less my absolute favorite so far.
