I have a love/hate relationship with SAO. At first I really liked the show but as time went on, I slowly noticed its flaws. Its not a horrendous pile of crap and I can see the appeal, and I guess that's why the show is popular. Doesn't mean its good though.
Pros:
The show is far from terrible in terms of a technical standpoint. The show looks great and the sound is competent and the fight scenes themselves, l admit, were enjoyable and not boring in the slightest. The Laughing Coffin arc was actually pretty good. Its an intense murder plot and I was intrigued the whole

time.
Cons:
The story is by far the most disappointing thing in SAO and its a damn shame since the first half really intrigued me with the whole, "You're trapped in a VR game and must beat it to be set free" kinda like Jumanji. But as it goes on, it gets less interesting. The pacing is horrible and doesn't flow naturally, especially with Kirito moving up from floors 5 to 100. And yes I'm well aware of Progressive but at least have a cohesive story that flows well. The show itself also lacks, well a plot. Its filled with filler episodes that basically don't provide anything besides some changes here and there.
The characters are also a big downside. Kirito is an alright character and I'll admit he's not a gary stue like most people make him out to be. But the character isn't interesting. The excuse that he's a beta tester is stupid and sometimes he pulls out a "Deus Ex Machina" out of nowhere with no rime or reason, like him somehow coming back to life from getting stabbed by the villain. Not to mention how Kirito is a freaking chick magnet that pulls in ladies to him like most of the side characters that appear. Asuna, as I have noticed, flip flops between personality traits going from a Tsundere to a damsel in distress and a lot more. But at least she has a backstory and I do like her as a character. The side characters only appear once or twice and don't do anything besides bloat on how gosh darn great Kirito is.
The Fairy Arc is also pretty stupid, from the side characters to the villain, but my main gripe is how it temporarily becomes a romance between Kirito and his sister. All I'm gonna say is: its weird and does nothing but gross the audience out. Nuff said.
Overall: while the show has its pros, it also has its cons that completely ruin the series for me and I'm honestly surprised that the show has a 4 on popularity despite its flaws, but then again it has mainstream appeal so I guess that's why. I never bothered watching all the spinoffs and Alicization as I lost interest in the show and I'm pretty disappointed with how the show turned out.
