I can't help but feel this is a bait and switch as a viewer.
Tower of God starts off by promising an incredibly difficult and likely fatal ascension, and in the first few episodes follows up on that.
Later on, it keeps re-stating the promise and not following up on it. A battle to the death with no deaths? Are you kidding me?
Normally this type of show is right up my alley, but this is leaving a sour taste in my mouth, especially with all the hype before it even came out about it being like Made in Abyss - it's not.

This show could have been a master piece, but instead just turned out well. In the first episode it makes the promise of "stranded far from home in extremely dangerous outer-space", and repeats that promise - but never follows up on it with an appropriate sense of despair.
It has great animation quality, great sound quality, interesting environments, great premise, fleshed out characters, a great character dynamic, but simply falls into the trap like many other anime to give a feel-good ending - and show no reprecussions, ultimately invalidating the incredibly harsh environment it builds as the story goes on, and the death and despair ... A quick no spoiler review:
This movie covers the fifth layer of the abyss, where the first season of the anime covered the first four layers. It's adapted beautifully, has its own great sound track, excellent animation, and is generally the same Made in Abyss as people who have watched the first season of the show know - although with this layer, there is definitely more emphasis on heavy action and less on the adventurous spirit. Even if you like the adventurous spirit - this isn't a bad thing, it's just a bit different which all stories need to stay fresh and interesting. Dec 17, 2019
Babylon is a cliche show that pretends not to be. The issue boils down to broken characters.
Babylon starts out as a true crime show, then quickly turns into a pseudo-supernatural crime show that supposedly talks about the morals around suicide and whether or not we should allow it. That's if you're giving it the benefit of the doubt, what it actually is is a dumpster fire. Simply put, to make a fleshed out story, the good characters need to be part bad, and the bad characters need to be part good. Otherwise the characters next actions are always predictable, and the viewer can anticipate the entire story ... |
