I'm looking for anime that can make me cry with meaningful, lasting impact. Especially fond of post-apocalyptic shows, with impressive worldbuilding, ideally with themes around the environment & human nature. Preferably grounded, in that sometimes I'll drop good shows if the power of friendship or training arc solves everything, or if people are regularly saved at the last second (Bungo Stray Dogs soz).
Hopefully, stories with more serious/adult themes and complex moral outlook. But also if it just had incredible cultural impact & generated memes - that counts as lasting IMO~
I appreciate cool directing, am willing to check out avant-garde/experimental stuff and novel storytelling, even if it's older, with weak animation or 3D.
I work ~around politics, so if any anime does that well, either via technical accuracy or just being emotionally moving & civic-related - plz recommend <3
My rating system - basically shifted by 1pt so 4 is average, 5 just above average. I only started watching anime in 2019.
10 - Masterpiece. Breathtaking artistic & cultural value, makes up for flaws.
9 - Incredible. Must-watch. Some minor flaws.
8 - Somewhat amazing. A must-watch for weebs.
7 - Very good to great. Might rewatch.
6 - Good. Pretty enjoyable.
5 - It's an anime. Mildly enjoyable, but can't not feel like I'm wasting my life watching it.
4 - Average (not median). Barely memorable.
3 - Weak. Largely disappointing & forgettable.
2 - Bad / Shitty / Terrible
1 - Distasteful Tragedy. Actually unprofessional to publish.

Scores also influenced by rating systems from the /r/anime podcast on the subject. These are all quotes-
Rewatchability:
"4-1: This show actively wasted my time & is some degree of awful.
5: I can't tell whether the show was worth watching.
6: The show was worth watching, but I wouldn't bother rewatching.
7: The show was good & I'd consider rewatching.
8: The show is special, & I would absolutely rewatch.
9: I love the show, & will rewatch multiple times, but it's ultimately too flawed to be a 10.
10: Transcends anime; is simply excellent art. Find something new to appreciate every rewatch."
On difference between 9 and 10 -
"9 - Near perfect, no major complaints about anything in show & good qualities are exceptionally well executed. In quality these are on par with a 10.
"10 - Near perfect, and crucially important to me on a personal level. These are shows that fundamentally changed the way I think about things or noticeable impact on the way I live my life."

(content warning: gore)
The rating scale logic is:
instead of rating 'very ugly person' or terrible meal a 1/10, I'd reserve the lowest score for appearances that verge on medical gore: bloody & scarred, pus or snot leaking - or, for food - extremely bitter stuff like wormwood tea, eating bark, dirt, or a loved one, plus that myth/movie scene with live monkey brains.
