Made in Abyss

The Abyss—a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. How did it come to be? What lies at the bottom? Countless brave individuals, known as Divers, have sought to solve these mysteries of the Abyss, fearlessly descending into its darkest realms. The best and bravest of the Divers, the White Whistles, are hailed as legends by those who remain on the surface.

Riko, daughter of the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, aspires to become like her mother and explore the furthest reaches of the Abyss. However, just a novice Red Whistle herself, she is only permitted to roam its most upper layer. Even so, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot with the appearance of an ordinary young boy. She comes to name him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events preceding his discovery. Certain that the technology to create Reg must come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture forth into the chasm to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit with their own eyes. However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss.

Made in Abyss is an adventure and action packed anime that follows the story of Reg and Riko as they embark into the abyss. The story is filled with excitement, wonder for the abyss, and love for the characters. The story line is incredibly unique, the characters have incredible depth, and everything about the abyss from the creatures to the animals living in it to the terrain to the strain of ascending are all super creative details that add an amazing amount to the story.

Now that we've got what made in abyss actually is, lets go into the nitty gritty, likes and dislikes etc.

Made ... in Abyss is an incredible and I mean incredibly visually stunning anime from start to finish. The animation is very clean and every scene feels like a high quality painting. The artstyle is very cutesy and simple but also very detailed for characters, creatures, relics, etc. While watching this show you can spot key features about every character you meet that might indicate their personality or persona just by the way they are drawn. The linking of personality traits and character design is done s u p e r well in this show and it just adds that depthness that can make you really like the characters.
The plot is incredibly unique I won't spoil anything but going into this show understanding that there is alot to learn about the abyss and the characters as well as the future scenes that happen play a big role in adding to the show's sense of adventure, and the sense of adventure is there 100000%.
This anime does more for you than you will anticipate, it lures you in with a fun sense of adventure and then smacks you in the face with the real morals of the story. It goes even further to throw emotional scenes and intense moments as well as learning moments where the characters are developing through the trials they face.
This anime has a special meaning for the people who have a strong sense of adventure and awe at the unknown. But for everyone this anime has something special for you as well, with characters to fall in love with, heartstring pulls, and overcoming dangerous trials! I can 100% recommend this show for almost anybody!
Made in abyss is a 10 for me, it does what it tries to do very well, but also it just has a strong way of delivering powerful emotional episodes. This normally by itself is not enough for me to rate an anime a 10 but made in abyss just throws out emotional roller coasters every time without even trying too hard! That's why I believe made in abyss is a 10, because the story is so good that before you know it, you'll be in love with every character.
One final point I'd like to make clear is just how human the characters are! The characters are easy to personally bond with, but also there are no cringy moments even when most characters from anime would be cringey at the worst times....nothing like that, which is a big deal to me since it can geniunely take away from a character's development if their WHOLE personality is being cringey when they are naked... It's more realistic since these characters are kids from an orphanage that they don't see nudity as all that and the show emulates that perfectly! Reg is a dude and he acts like one!!!! He doesn't act like some cringy highschool dxd teenager! He acts like a real DUDE! and Riko acts like an actual young girl! albeit with way less shame but I think that adds to her personality! I don't really know a more direct way of explaining this concept, you'll just have to bridge the gap on your own when watching... But Hopefully what I am saying...or typing is making sense!

I trully am impacted at the stunning story that made in abyss has to offer and I truly recommend it to everyone! Everything that this story has to offer, from start to finish is just an incredibly fun journey filled with hope and overcoming.

Currently waiting for season 3!

It's kinda good i guess? If you're a person with pretty normal expectations of stories and easily like stuff this would prolly hit the spot.

Seeing other people's reviews mention how amazing the world building is really confuses me, while watching the first season of the show I wrote down as detailed notes as I could about every creature, relic, every Layer of the Abyss, classifications of cave raiders as I could, 1802 words in all and over 8000 characters. It's just not that impressive, it's very surface level world building (heh surface level). It's basically just the episodic creatures that cause a problem for a ... bit then disappear, and the relics barely matter, multiple Layers go by in a breeze sometimes without their enviroment ever mattering. I wouldn't recommend you watch it if that's important to you. It's an average story with a setting promising more but never delivering. That stuff that's interesting on paper only exists on paper.

The characters are kinda what you'd expect, most you'll get out of them is "I don't want my friend to die!" and "I like exploring the Abyss!" pretty basic. Best one is Nanachi.

The pacing is brutal, minute long recaps at the start of every episode (worse example is the recap and opening taking over 5 minutes before the episode starts!!!) and just kind of a slowish slog around the middle.

The story is about them going down a big hole. They are trying to survive and go down the hole. There's more to this of course but like, you could easily forget that while watching for a reason. It promises more, but at every chance it has it refuses to do more, the Abyss you want to see explored really bad will be ignored, the relics will be ignored, the world building is just trickery for a pretty average story,

Animation and music really good of course, but personally I don't think that matters to me unless every thing else is good. Feel free to appreiciate the animation, but even if this had the best animation and music in the world, that barely adds anything to the actual enjoyment or quality of any given scene. So while it's a positive thing, I don't feel an urge to blindly open my eyes with wonder and get sucked into the world or whatever people do.

The themes of the story and how dark it is, feel very half hearted. Like VERY half hearted, hearing people online talks about the cosmic horror of it or whatever is SO weird. THE DARK STUFF IS THE EXCEPTION, there isn't any foreboding darkness and horror over the story, it just happens every once in a while and they go back to just regular happy going down the hole time after it's resolved. Like a lot of things, it's surface level.

The sexual stuff is weird, very weird. And it's CONSTANT and OBVIOUS, they'll get strung up naked, gets boners, they talk about sex constantly and it's not part of the story. It's just the author being a pervert. Extremely hard to ignore so you shouldn't think you can either, no good at all!!

I'd recommend most people to watch it, but if you feel stuff has to work hard to impress you, look at something else

Recommending this anime is akin to playing a cruel joke. The entire introduction, cover art, and synopsis are a misleading trap into watching the author's disgusting torture fetish.

The art and atmosphere are successful in capturing the wonder of any good fantastical coming of age story. Unfortunately for audiences it all leads to a subversive plot and frankly childishly shocking imagery.

The protagonists have legitimate motivations and are easy to sympathize with. The characters they meet in the Abyss are less so however. Being either cartoonishly villainous or shallow characatures of victims, the plot and personalities of all of the characters in this anime take a back ... seat to the aforementioned imagery.

Find something else to watch, and avoid the mental gymnastics it takes to justify the existence of this work.
