Well, here is one of the many controversial reviews on Sword Art Online.
Remember, this is all the biased opinion of someone who is still relatively new to anime (started in spring 2022) and SAO is the first anime I watched so I am obviously going to be biased towards it.
Another thing is that I am only going to talk about the aincrad arc and not the fairy dance arc.
One of the main problems with the anime is the constant time skips which makes the story feel very incohesive and flow weirdly. This is

due to the fact that the anime plot is the result of merging multiple sidestories and volumes together (Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4, First part of volume 8, and First part of proggresive 1) with the original story (volume 1) only consisting of up to Kirito leaving Klein and most of floor 74 and 75. Episodes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 12 are all from different volumes.
Also, Kirito. He's considered to be THE gerenic, overpowered protagonist of anime and that's true. The main problem with anime Kirito is that we can't see his thoughts. When reading the novels you don't see Kirito in this way as much as you can see the thought process behind all of his actions and alot of his actions tend to result from his personality and he just does them naturally (yes Kirito has a personality). You can best see this in action in progressive volume 4 (proggressive is an expansion of the aincrad arc that goes through the floors one by one and is where episode 2 comes from) where a portion of the story is set in Asuna's perspective and we and Asuna see Kirito is this aloof, skilled, knowledgable, confident and so on -this is basically what the anime shows him to be as well.
Anyway I wrote an annoying amount but yeah. I hope you learned something or took anything I said into consideration.
