One of the few real-world issues I will lament in this forum is the unhappy love of death that occasionally finds its way into Japanese anime. This show, Platinum End, is another iteration of the kind of show that’s obsessed with death and dying. While this anime is intriguing at times, ultimately it is completely overshadowed by that darkness which no one should have to live under, making the show far less interesting in the end.

There are some really good things about this show. The artwork is exquisite. The story has some strong points, excluding the ugliness aforementioned. A few of the characters are really ... interesting, at least at some point during the show. The dialogue is good at some points. There’s a lot to like here. But then there are some really big negatives as well. The love of death aspect is the biggest, but you have some poor character development and handling of the story as well. And as nice as the artwork is, it’s not effective for this show somehow.

Just based on those things, this show is around average. But the ugliness, the darkness without justification, makes this show a big flop in my mind. I won’t automatically give a negative review to a show just because it’s full of outright evil (see Black Lagoon), but if there’s not a good reason for those kinds of displays then I will very much hold those aspects against it. Such is the case with Platinum End.

A strange and wonderful experience!

It's as if this phrase was made for this anime. The only thing “anime” about this show is that it is actually “anime.” It’s about as unusual as anime could get and still be anime. And yet it elevates the medium to still even greater heights. Astounding artwork, amazing characters, and engrossing but lightweight storylines adorn this most interesting work. I’ve seen few shows like this. It truly is unique, unusual, foreign, mysterious, imaginative, strange—and wonderful.

I really liked this show, and I really want S2 to happen. I understand the manga is still ongoing, ... so I presume there will be a S2 at some point. I can’t imagine that this show wasn’t successful. Yes CGI does turn some people off, but I don’t think it turns off people so much, and in such great numbers, that many could have missed this show. And if you saw it, you almost certainly liked it. There’s a lot to like, and in my opinion not a lot to dislike. This show—I will say it—is a gem. And hopefully a not-so-hidden gem. It is very deserving, and if S2 is ever announced, I will be bouncing off the walls in anticipation.

Hige o Soru, Soshite Joshi Kousei o Hirou is another of those modern anime afflicted with a paragraph for a title. I don’t understand how we went from single word titles to “After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Student.” You see this extra-long-name thing in the memes all the time now, it’s gotten to such a ridiculous stage. I mean, what’s wrong with just…

Wait, none of that matters!!! You did what???

The premise of this anime cannot be ignored! A grown man takes in a high school girl off the streets? What the fudgzilla hellfire sauce flavored lolipops ... is this??

I’ll tell you what it sounds like. It sounds like the thing that shall not be named, that’s what it sounds like. But also, I’ll tell you what it really is. It’s a beautiful and heartfelt tale of a poor girl in a difficult place in her life who happens to run across one of the sweetest male anime characters you’ll ever find. That’s what it really is.

A tricky story handled pretty well, beautiful characters that touch your heart, and amazing artwork and cinematography, this show managed to prod a lot of our senses in a lot of different ways. And while I won’t go so far as saying this show was anything more than just good, it was certainly remarkable, and for more reasons than you might think—well, mostly just the one reason.
