Definitely a different spin on Mech and one of excellent originality - and even more so a interesting prediction of the flaws to face technology in the future. Who'd have thought deep seated computer viruses would have been a scourge in the perspective of people living in the late 1980's?
Anyhow, the writing and animation is excellent - and reflects a passion and master in craft that is unusual, especially in todays standards. There is rich details everywhere in virtually all of the scenes and deserved full points.
But it isn't without its flaws, and in many scenes, its fairly obvious where dialogue consists only

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage
(Anime)
add
This is one of those shows age well with time - its a continuation of the first season, but boasting improved animation, deeper character dives, and thicker plot concepts. More importantly, it demonstrates what animation had lost over the last two decades. Now its more about meaningless noise and isekai bs that says nothing about our own world, and that isn't to say it says much about thier own worlds. That aside, here's why BL S2 is superior, even to today and going beyond nostalgia.
The first two episodes are pretty poignant. Beyond the absurdity of children being serial killers - it is more relevant now ... Oct 4, 2024
Summer Ghost
(Anime)
add
Quality is the great equalizer in anything really. Sometimes you have big budget producers that make 2 hour long movies that are utterly forgettable, and then you get Summer Ghost - which in a short time makes a lot of itself.
Anyhow, the story delves into those who are close to death- physically, cosmically, however you read it. Having been surrounded by suicides and death in my life, it felt a but close to home. Imagine someone could see right through your meat-suit smoke screen and knew that you where dying in some way and driving towards the edge. It's a wonderful concept that is ... Aug 16, 2024
Growing into adulthood, this anime does a wonderful job showing how the hole that becomes many of our lives becomes a slope in which our world becomes boxed in. As it goes, the main character would arrive to a small town island with the sense of urban spite and closedness that's all too familiar.
Yet this ice is broken down by the unlikeliest of people, children. As I've come to know as a parent, children are wonderful at reminding us that the world doesn't need to be so linear and gray. They are creative, and their emotions come without prejudice. What the series does a ... May 12, 2024
Sousou no Frieren
(Anime)
add
I dont know the hype it gets? Seriously, Frieren is one of those series that was pretty good back when anime title releases where routinely adequate with a decently creative concept and art. Despite that, the animation isn't mind blowing, the music doesn't give crazy highlights or mind provoking feelings.
It has the same flaws as the anime, in which the greatest aspects of the title constantly miss target. The whole point is that time works differently to Frieren, and her greatest mistake is only realized after the Hero party is all but gone. Yet, as Fern and crew grow, how does that subplot work? ... As others have said; Cope.
This hardly sets itself apart from the COUNTLESS titles of the same mediocre game HUD based isekai-esque drivel flooding anime since SAO. MC: The same underdog story of dreg chaff being blessed with rule breaking special skills and plot armor. Plot: The same mindless punching bags from all other isekais of the type. The same attractive and graceful Mary Sue’s, the same male supporting characters who are bland as sin. Art and sound: The same baseline as literally any other comparable series. Seriously, how does reach an 8? I could only imagine that it’s fan-boy inflation. SIGH. Jan 8, 2024

As others had said, being weary of Chinese Anime, but seriously, this might change my opinion on their side of the industry. It has been a LONG time since I have seen a good investigative thriller like something of Death Note. Now add wonderful animation, good music, a solid plot, and boy - a great twist. If this the new material coming from Chinese production, Japanese production is in trouble. If there isn't an end to the mediocrity on the other side of the sea, China is coming for the top. I cant wait to watch the second season. At this stage in anime, I

Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01

Perhaps what possessed me to watch this mess was that it was on Amazon Prime, but anyhow, yikes.
Really, in what world do you find dangerous sealed military equipment, open it, and decide to pilot it? Okay, maybe you're dumb and dont grasp the consequences of getting arrested over it, surely when you get confronted you'll cooperate right? Nah, you try to MURDER them, and even succeed when you shoot down aircraft remorselessly. You call everyone dumb for trying to stop you from meeting your ex-girlfriend while rampaging Tokyo. That woman in the robo suit who wants to reason with you? Shoot her too. Dear lord, can ... May 2, 2022
What S1 brought to the table looks to be entirely absent at this point and has regressed into the same egregious tropes. While the entire product so far is mediocre, if you're into the brain numbing therapy that Isekai's have become, this is pretty vanilla stuff.
Anyhow, within minutes of episode one, you begin to see things unravel from the highs of season one. A character who has no story with Naofumi volunteers to be his slave - literally giving up free will for the idea of having power. The focus on the original side characters is lost and they simply become background noise to carry ... Apr 20, 2022
Shin Evangelion Movie:||
(Anime)
add
Complexity doesn't make something better:
The problem is that against the original series and the first two movies - there was an emphasis not only on building a multilayered story, but also not forgetting to keep it grounded on the idea of even fictional realism and self established laws. To me, this was so distracting that it was hard to focus on the multifaceted philosophical plot they were trying to pitch. There's countless shots in the previous titles of the normal life that supported Nerve - the often tenuous costs of the program and what it took to make it work. By 3+1, this facade of grounded-ism ... |
