Both main characters can see things that normal people can't, spirits. Witch a calm and peaceful feel to it, both main characters encounter both good and bad spirits, and helping those in need. Both main characters are pretty quiet, and are the loner type. When they were children, the were thought of a freaks for seeing things no one else could see. After meeting different kinds of spirits their outlook about them and life changes. Both animes are episodic, with both good, sad, and bittersweet endings.

In both anime, the main characters had someone die who was very precious to them. The people who dies came back as a ghost, not able to pass on. Their are many sad and bittersweet moments as the characters try to find closure and come in terms with their feelings.

Both anime revolve around the the characters playing a survival to the death game against others players resulting in a prize. The players were all pushed into the game under their will and the only way out was death. In Mirai Nikki, the players used a diary to help them that could tell about the future, and when the diary breaks they die. In Btooom, the players use different kinds of bombs and have a use radar to locate the characters They are both full of blood, killing, betrayal,companionship ,and romantic scenes.

They are both set in a prison and have the same dark theme. The prisoners both get treated very poorly. Deadman Wonderland is more science fiction because of the powers they posses while Rainbow is more realistic as it tells the story of young prisoners taking place in 1955.
