This manga got me thinking about free will.
In terms of the manga itself, it had well-written jokes, and the writer properly fleshed out all possible ideas very well. Overall amazing, and although I could've wished for a teeny bit more in terms of interpersonal character development, it's a rom-com that's a clear mark above all the rest. Amazing job, Tsutsui, I've read your masterpiece twice.
But the idea that Nariyuki could've ended up with any of the girls seems ridiculous in real life, although a satisfying ending to a manga (no qualms there). So to explain what I mean, here's how the endings happened (massive spoilers):
Uruka:
...
Uruka confesses,
Ogata: Uruka doesn't confess, Ogata plays the "love game"
Furuhashi: Uruka confesses, Furuhashi is nursed by Nariyuki
Kominami: None of the 3 girls do anything, Kominami and Nariyuki meet by chance on island due to jobs
Kirisu: None of the 4 girls do anything, Nariyuki works with Kirisu at Ichinose High
In all of these endings, Nariyuki makes no active choice, his future partner is only determined by which girl acts first (or doesn't act, in other cases). So what? Our future is determined by our life events, events which we don't even control? I refuse to accept it. Nariyuki simply falls in love with any girl that spends more than a day within 5 meters of him? Wasn't his whole character about being a person who would be true to himself and genuine with others? The actions that people take are based on their personalities, which are formed by past events, mostly during childhood, influenced by family, friends, and community. The actions that the girls took are because of their personalities, they wouldn't have acted another way, and the same goes for Nariyuki. Are people really determined mostly by their environment? I don't have an answer, but I would like to believe otherwise. I would like to believe that we as humans, have the free will to affect our future, and that Nariyuki would, on his own, seek out his true love, without relying on external events to push him.
Besides that, this was an amazing manga, art was cute, also Fumino best girl, she would've gotten the courage to confess without having to break a leg.
