I've been looking forward to this anime ever since it was announced and it did not disappoint. As it says in its PV, Yuri!!! on Ice is an original anime about figure skating and I would recommend it to fans of figure skating or people looking for something new and fun to watch.
The staff really put the time and effort to capture the feeling of the figure skating world and I would like to thank Kenji Miyamoto for his contribution. He really worked his butt off on those routines.
As for its characters, it's the story of a top-notch skater that struggles with performing under
...
pressure and his figure skating idol turned inexperienced coach. I appreciate how Yuuri Katsuki is not a rookie. I'm always thankful for anime that have adults as their protagonists.
Yuri!!! on Ice focuses on a protagonist who already reached his goal, the Grand Prix Finale, but failed miserably. Despite his nerdy appearance, Yuuri is an athlete that hates to lose and tends to be hard on himself despite already having gained fans and achievements. On the other hand, Victor Nikiforov has already reached the top, but has lost his inspiration and love for figure skating which he finds again through Yuuri's skating. Together, the two of them work together to win the Grand Prix Finale.
It was interesting to have a story focused on the athlete/coach relationship instead of a rivarly. On the other hand, I think Yuuri's rivalry with Yuri Plisetsky could have been fleshed out more.
The rest of the characters are likable and easily stand out from each other. I liked hearing their thoughts during their routines instead of commentary about their skating. The costume designs for each character were also fantastic. Thank you Chacott's Yuiko Sagiri for your contribution!
It's hard to animate sports with lots of movement like figure skating, but the staff managed to pull it off albeit not perfectly.
The music for the routines was a pleasure to listen to and there are quite a number of memorable pieces. The BGM was also nice.
On a side note, the sexiness wasn't over the top like in Yamamoto's other work, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.
As for the downs, it really could have done well with an extra episode between 4 and 5 to introduce the other skaters and expand upon Yuuri and Victor's relationship. The pace felt too fast in some episodes.
Overall, it's a fun show that was crafted with lots of love for the figure skating world.
