Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Big O and Darker than Black draw influences from film noir (and, some may say, Batman). Both are set in a grim future brought about by a cataclysmic event that occurred years prior. The protagonists are well-known professionals in their line of work with shady pasts that may be connected to the aforementioned disaster.

Mai-HiME
add

While Lyrical Nanoha and Mai-HiME seem to start off following the monster-of-the-week format, both these series drop this in the middle of their run in exchange for intensifying the action. Despite a prominently female cast, both shows are aimed toward the male demographic, and rightly so as they feature explosive battles easily rivaling those seen in shounen action series.

Zero no Tsukaima
add

Featuring Rie Kugimiya and Satoshi Hino in similar leading roles, Shakugan no Shana and Zero no Tsukaima tell the story of male high school students drawn into the unfamiliar and encountering flat-chested, ill-tempered girls. While both shows are produced by the same studio and based on a series of light novels, Zero is meant to be more fun and light-hearted compared to Shana.
