*SPOILER FREE*
I can’t recommend Domestic Girlfriend enough for anyone searching for alternate forms of self harm. It’s addictive, it’s completely unpredictable and at times it’s immensely excruciating but my god I haven’t read a manga this fast in a while. For anyone brave enough to venture into this literary anomaly, be sure to brace yourself, forget everything you know about story telling.
Plot: 3/10
The story arcs change in tone so frequently as the reader it’s like riding a giant pendulum... and the pendulum is on fire... and you’re naked, alone and scared. Some arcs have fun character development and a unique setting, others serve
...
as filler between events and drag like hell. Then there’s my personal favourite arcs, which I dub the “What the actual fuck” arcs. The writing here is not good, but I often took comfort in knowing literally anything could happen because "This is Domestic Girlfriend after all.”
SHOUTOUT TO: whatever the fuck that drug arc was, I was simultanously crying in confusion, fear and laughter.
Art: 5/10
I mean, it’s fine, .5 chapters are there for the *cough* cultured of you.
Characters: 4/10
Other than our main trio, all other characters tend to serve one purpose and they do it well enough. Natsuo develops into a surprisingly bearable protagonist, after all the bullshit this man went through I couldn’t help pity and root for him to get at least one W. Rui’s development throughout the series was pretty extreme too, though her choices were often fairly questionable. The same can be said about Hina, although logical decisions apparently aren’t commonplace in whatever universe Domestic Girlfriend takes place in, so I’m not entirely sure why I’m trying to rationally review these absolute nut cases.
SHOUTOUT TO: Kobayashi Masaki for putting up with everyone’s bullshit and Momo for being adorable.
Enjoyment: 10/10
"Do you think God lives in Heaven because he too, lives in fear of what he’s created?” - Steve Buscemi from Spy Kids 2, reportedly describing Domestic Girlfriend’s ending
Thanks for reading my first review, I’m gonna get back to my attempts at mentally comprehending that ending now. I’ll see you brave readers in Domestic Girlfriend rehab.
