This anime could've been something special if the writer wasn't OBSESSED with Memempu, the main character. The dynamic the main characters have is that Memempu is an impulsive and reckless child genius while her father Gagumber is an experienced miner who's a force to be reckoned with when serious but is a total goofball otherwise.

The problem is that the anime refuses to let Memempu's character flaws be character flaws. She constantly puts herself and others into danger due to her recklessness but it's always Gagumber who gets blamed. Even though there are some points that seemed purpose made for her to grow as a character ... they're forgotten immediately in the next episode and she's back to her usual selfish, awful self.

Now a child being a brat isn't the problem here. It's that the writer seems to think she's perfect the way she is. It's like reality itself changes just so Memempu can be in the right. She never learns anything, she never grows as a character and she never EVER admits fault.

As for Gagumber, he's the punchingbag of the whole story. If something bad is happening onscreen, it's almost always happening to Gagumber even when he's done nothing wrong to earn it. Now, personally I've never really enjoyed comedy where one character is always the butt of the joke; but this goes beyond that. He's consistently punished and mocked for doing the right thing. It's like the writer forgot to make him anything but comic relief even though the plot keeps trying to say there's more to him than being a goofball. And Memempu seems to forget that he's on this journey with her PURELY to protect her too. It's like she thinks she deserves everything and the writer is happy to oblige.

There's also the fact that as of episode 8 of 12 there has been no progress made in the story. Most episodes are self contained and don't really matter on the grand scheme of things. ESPECIALLY for character development as I mentioned before. This journey could last 12 episodes or 120, I have no clue which, and that's the problem.

Whatever points this anime gets, it gets from its originality, but that can't carry a series. Especially since it's obvious that the writer intended for Gagumber and Memempu's dynamic to be at the core of this series, when it actually is its weakest aspect.

This is the worst anime I have ever had the displeasure of watching. I'd rather watch Ex-Arm 5 times than rewatch this even once. The fact that this appalling anime is rated 7.5 is an insult to every anime that has a lower or similar rating.

I could honestly write paragraph after paragraph, recounting every event in this shitshow of an anime and detail but I genuinely can't be bothered to spend any more energy on this garbagefire.

I can barely excuse blind nostalgia, but if you enjoy this without those nostalgia glasses then please delete your account because your shit taste will result in lowering ... the score of actual quality anime.

This has worse characters than THE ROOM!

When I watched the first episode of Fumetsu no Atata e I was worried that the series would never reach those emotinoal heights again. I'm afraid to say I was right.

As I write this review I'm at the end of the Gugu arc, the only arc so far to have ANY effect on me since episode 1. Basically every arc is a new sobstory that's only sad conceptually. Let me explain, when you see that a child has died in the news you feel sad, but nowhere near as sad as if it was a child you knew. In the same way, sad things happening ... in any form of media causes a base level of sadness. But for an anime to make you cry, you need to know and love the character that the sad things are happening to.

That said, the arc with March was pathetic. I never felt any sympathy for her other than that base level, and in fact she often got on my nerves.

And what was established right after that, the Nokkers, are laughable! "We have to save the world" because that's what we want about an immortal being's journey. Remember in Kino's Journey when Kino saved the world? No? Me neither. On top of that, the Nokker fights are just... the worst kind of anime fight. When none of the good guys' attacks work until the plot decides that they do. There is no strategy, no planning, no clever thinking, nothing. Just stumbling into victory.

Another thing I'll mention is that the story is kinda nonsensical in places. The Review Tips and Guidelines to the side says to try not to write any spoilers so I won't directly mention them. But things like Yanome's method of control over Ninannah and how the characters treat what boozeman did are just stupid.

The visuals are okay, the soundtrack is okay. The visuals never awed me and the character designs are just odd in places, if a bit creative. As for the soundtrack, there's nothing there that makes me emotional just by listening to it and as I write this I can't even remember a single song other than the OP and ED, which are honestly decent at best. I'm giving both a 6 anyway because the lack of enjoyment from the episodes may be the reason why I didn't really care about them.

I guess I'll talk about the characters now, Fushi gets developed pretty slowly and that's probably for the best, but with the latest developments I don't see him becoming anything special. Just the standard nice, optimistic and brave (easy to be brave when you're immortal) hero. March is, as I said, just a snotty kid who exists because bad things happening that involve children are sad. And Gugu's story is such a forced sobstory that I can't even really feel bad about it. Again with no spoilers, tree trunks would make a LOT of noise tumbling down.

As for my enjoyment I'll just say that it's been weeks and I can't bring up the enthusiasm to watch the 3 episodes I'm behind on, even after an arc that made me feel a modicum of emotion. I'd heard so much about the manga and I can't express my disappointment in this mess of a story.

Who knows, maybe it gets WAY better as it goes on, but the existence of Nokkers makes me doubt that. Also, the anime is rated very highly already, (69th best anime according to score as I write this) which I wholeheartedly disagree with. I think with it rated this highly (even higher than the manga), it's pretty safe to say that the quality remains at about the same level, or even worsens.

There really is nothing that needs to be said other than the fact that this anime isn't even remotely funny.

If you want to watch an entire anime of the annoying "Oh no! The girl I like accidentally showed me her panties!" joke from every ecchi anime ever made go for it. Otherwise, watch a better ecchi anime. I don't understand how this anime got even remotely positive reviews when there are actually fun ecchi anime out there like Monster Musume.

Literally every joke is the same, I'm not exaggerating. Senpai tries a magic trick, senpai fails and gets into a lewd situation. That's the entire anime. ... There is no overall narrative, nor is there any reason to watch this over better things. I don't understand how people don't get bored with the exact same setup and punchline several times per episode.

Don't support anime which were clearly written to appeal to a demographic instead of any real passion or creativity. "I want to make a shittily written ecchi anime but I need a gimmick for it to stand out. I know, I'll just google a few magic tricks!" That's how this was made, no passion for anything but money.
