The reason I heard about this anime is a strange one: a particular type of fanboy crying foul over KyoAni producing Free!. I read things like 'why do they make it with guys, it sucks now!" and "it's just K-On!, but with guys. Why do stupid girls always want what we have?!"
Apart from the irony of saying "stupid girls" and wanting more anime about girls, one thing stood out for me: "K-On! is like Free!".
Seeing how I love Free!, what better thing to check out next than K-On?
I was not disappointed: it has the same kind of funny, essentially good-natured type of characters that Free!
...
has. It is filled with humor, friendship, the drive to succeed (well, sometimes). Though I like sports/club anime, I don't mind when the characters spend episodes doing other stuff. Therefore, I was not bothered with all the cake-eating and chatting they all do.
Also, as so often with this type of anime, I learned things about something I knew next to nothing about musical instruments and light music.
K-On has the type of wacky humor that relies on characterization, which lifts it far above anime that rely purely on fanservice humor.
It is a shame that all the negativity dumped on Free! has kept girls away from this anime, since it is really good.
