Have you ever seen an anime you were convinced was going to be really cool and interesting and only just to have it let you down to no end? Welcome to my experience with Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka. After two episodes which presented a genuinely interesting and refreshing take on the harem genre (interesting takes on mythological creatures, nobody particularly interested in each other romantically, basically just putting up with each other simply because they have to), this series succumbs to the harem tropes it actively avoids and just becomes ultimately a very lazy series.
The initial concept for this show is actually
...
pretty interesting, with Ayumu who has just recently become a zombie living with the necromancer who resurrected him because, well what else is he going to do realistically. After his transformation, they meet other mythological creatures and beings such as a magical school girl and a vampire ninja. They fight creatures called megalos which are evil spirits that actually have some really creative and inspired designs to them. In one episode, they fight a giant whale in a school uniform that would put Sin from Final Fantasy X to shame. In another, they fight a giant enemy crab and attack its weak point for massive damage. One of the big points of humor in these fights is how as a zombie Ayumu basically has no powers, so he has to use magical girl powers a la Sailor Moon, which include gratuitous transformation sequences (it’s actually pretty funny in practice.) In this regard, the first half of the series is the best because it focuses on the sheer lunacy of the entire situation and the creatures they have to fight.
But then something terrible happens, Zombie No Desu Ka starts to take itself seriously. This show, about a zombie living who uses magical girl powers and lives with a necromancer, another magical girl and a vampire ninja, starts to take itself incredibly seriously for some reason right around episode 4 or 5 and it absolutely kills the momentum. When the show isn’t having fun with its ridiculous premise, its bogged down by pointless drama about Ayumu’s killer or a story arc later in the series that is so ridiculous that I can’t believe they even animated it. On top of all this, after episode 6 the show just starts to become a victim of the same tired harem/ecchi anime tropes that we’ve seen a million times before. The jokes start to get really lazy, the girls start to get interested in Ayumu, a new tsundere vampire ninja is introduced, and the entire show just becomes a drag. It just drags itself through the motions up until the final episode, which is almost unwatchable. It’s a pool episode featuring some terrible J-Pop performances from the cast of girls that I’m convinced almost made my ears bleed. How in the hell did we get to this point?
This is what happens when you completely forget why your show works and just start pulling stuff out of thin air to kill time. This show could have been really cool by sticking to having fun with its absurd initial set up and following it through to the end. I was completely on board to enjoy this show thoroughly. Please don’t waste your time on this show. It’s a crime that a show like this ended up getting better ratings across Japan than a masterpiece like Fractale, despite this being a wasted opportunity. If you want a real comedy series, look elsewhere; this will just leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

As an anime fan, I personally love finding shows that take me completely by surprise. Sure big hype shows are great too, but there’s something about finding an anime with little to no hype that turns out to be amazing that really strikes a cord with me. I wasn’t expecting much from Fractale, but what I found was what is sure to be one of the best animes of the decade and an easy contender for anime of the year.
Fractale is the story of an island governed by the Fractale system, a computer super-program that is worshipped as a religion by the people.
...
Our main character is Clain, a boy who collects what he antiques (even though they’re things like Ipods and laptops) who meets a girl named Phryne. Phryne has a mysterious connection with the Fractale system and gives Clain a doppel (essentially a holographic representative of a real person) child named Nessa. Eventually Clain and crew meet a group of so-called revolutionaries called the Lost Millenium trying to bring down the Fractale system for good. So is our story for this anime, and while it may seem simple, it is anything but.
What makes Fractale so fantastic is just how brilliantly it is written every step of the way. Clain, Nessa, and Phryne are three of the best written and believable anime characters I have seen recently who all act believably to every situation (no over-the-top anime reactions here). In addition, the cast involved with Lost Milennium are also really well defined and avoid the usual noble rebel tropes in really interesting ways. At points, the group acts more like guerilla terrorists than noble rebels. Even though they are supposed to take down the Fractale system which they claim robs people of their humanity, are they any better by resorting to extreme tactics? Though it is true that the Fractale system takes away people’s ability to be “human”, this aspect of the plot makes it much more interesting and thought provoking than it otherwise would have been.
Another striking feature about the plot is the themes the show tackles. While the more apparent themes of nature vs. technology are present, there are also hints of thematic elements dealing with the nature of organized religion. The Fractale officials act as a theocracy even though the religion they promote doesn’t actually cause violence to others. The themes of organized religion vs. free will in combination with nature vs. technology are a unique combination and the fact that it’s the people running both sides that aren’t innocent and not the ideas they represent make the conflict much more interesting to think about. This leads to a conclusion that smartly addresses this dichotomy and represents some of the most well thought out and three dimensional writing you will find for anime this season.
In addition to the fantastically written story line, the art in Fractale is in a word beautiful. It’s very similar to a Hayao Miyazaki film asthetically with bright water color visuals and great character designs. The entire show is just a joy to watch every second and really makes you appreciate how beautifully realized the entire production is. On top of this, the music is fantastic with great orchestral scores that hit all the right notes, whether it’s the more action-orientated sequences or the quiet moments where the characters enjoy each other’s company.
This show just works on every single level. The story is one of the best written animes in recent memory despite doing away with many fantasy anime tropes. This, in addition with the fantastic characterization, art, and music all come together to make one of the best animes of the year. Seriously, I cannot praise this anime enough, but I can’t because I don’t want to spoil anything for people. Simply put, Fractale is one of the best animes you will see this year and you are doing yourself and the anime community a huge disservice by not watching it.
I give Fractale, an A+.

Some people may already know this, but the original Evangelion series is my favorite anime of all time. I often consider it and End of Evangelion (yeah, screw the original TV ending) to be landmarks in anime story-telling and character development. When I first saw the first movie in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, I thought it was a great movie, but I thought this new series would never reach the peaks that the original series did. Having watched this second film, You Can (Not) Advance, I revoke that statement. This new series has proved to be just as thought provoking
...
and amazing as the original series.
The story picks up right after You Are (Not) Alone, introducing us to a new EVA pilot Mari, a somewhat maniacal and scary pilot who will do absolutely anything to defeat the angels and has fun piloting the EVAs (wow...I mean just wow...). The other pilot fans are a lot more familiar with, Asuka finally makes her debut here, and she's just as self-important and egotistical as you remember. This new film covers the events between episodes 8-20, and that's where I'm going to stop telling you the plot. Seriously, don't ask me about the plot or else I'll be tempted to spill the beans and ruin every surprise and holy crap moment in the movie (there are a lot, let's just say that).
There are drastic changes to the events that you remember that would ruin the experience if I told you. None of these changes are arbitrary though, they feel very natural for the characters and story that you know, and in some ways drastically alter how characters interact with each other. The ending really demonstrates how well these changes work as the romantic relationship between two characters that never got together in the original series takes front stage. There is so much emotion in this scene I'm at a loss of words to describe it. The changes are all very well thought out and most important, all work incredibly well. The writing is some of the best in anime I've seen in quite some time. Nothing feels forced, nothing feels unnecessary, and nothing feels unnatural. In essence, its almost perfect.
Everything about this film is so close to perfection its hard to even write about. The visuals are incredible, using CG effects that blend seamlessly into the more traditional 2D character designs. The evoke the appropriate amount of dread and apocalyptic imagery that Evangelion and overall serve to make the audience fascinated by what's going on. The visuals are all polished to perfection and leave you with some of the best visuals and special effects in anime for quite some time.
The soundtrack is also great, composed by Shiro Saigusu, the composer from the original series and End of Evangelion. Though it is different from those, it is still perfect for this movie. It brings the right emotions to every moment and brings the right sense of ironic dread you saw in End of Evangelion in all the right moments.
I really wish I could tell you guys more about why this film and this story is so amazing. But know this, Hideaki Anno has really outdone himself this time. I was skeptical about whether he could make make lightning strike twice, and he absolutely did. All the changes to the story and characters really make this reboot something special that should be viewed on the same level as the original series and End of Evangelion. This is as close to perfection in anime as you will likely get this year. Even if you hated the original series, I suggest trying the Rebuild series, its that amazing. The wait for Evangelion 3.0 has now officially begun for me, and with a movie like You Can (Not) Advance preceding it, it's going to be hard.
I give Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0- You Can (Not) Advance, A+

Soul Eater is about a group of students who attend a school for aspiring demon hunters, Shibusen. The story follows Maka, an scythe weilder and her partner, Soul, who transforms into the scythe she uses. Each hunter is paired with a partner who can turn into a weapon, and the two must fight in unison. The other main characters include Death the Kid, and his weapons Liz and Patty who become twin pistols, and Black Star, along with his partner Tsubaki, who has the unique ability to transform into several weapon types as a jack of all trades. These students as well as their teachers
...
now fight the various demons and witches who want to destroy Shibusen in order to take over the world without consequence.
This show is incredibly stylish, literally everything has a very cool vibe about it and really stands out from other similar animes. If FLCL and Bleach came together and had a love child, that child would be Soul Eater. The characters are all likeable and unique, even if they do follow the list of shonen anime stereotypes (loud kid who wants to be the best, check; quiet cool guy, check; self-depricating girl who holds much potential power, double check.) The adult characters are less stereotypical than the kids, which can make them more interesting to watch in certain episodes, however. Even if their personalities are familiar, there is enough unique and enjoyable about them that it never becomes a problem.
The fights themselves are very well animated and choreographed. They're all ridiculous and cartoony, but they are always visceral and exciting to watch. The progression is also very shonen in nature, with enemies that are way stronger than the heroes, and the heroes having to train to beat them and gain new powers, but again its so entertaining it shouldn't become a big issue. The fights are all about style and execution though, and if you keep that in mind and don't analyze them with rational thought, they all become very entertaining and exciting. The first 26 episodes are great flashy entertainment for anime fans.
I really wish I could stop the review at this point, and tell you Soul Eater is a really fun shonen series that fans of action anime should see. Now the bad point of the show, the entire second half of the series. Around the halfway point, Soul Eater changes from a lighthearted, entertaining fun action anime into a serious, melodramatic action anime. The story starts to take itself way too seriously, and the enjoyment of this anime greatly suffers because of this. When your anime is about people who transform into guns and swords who fight witches, it's kind of hard to take the change in tone seriously.
Soul Eater ends up losing most if not all of its charm because of this drastic and unnecessary shift in tone. All of the characters become whiny punks who sulk all day, and Maka becomes borderline unbearable as a main character with her melancholic attitude and constant bitching about how she's not strong enough to fight the main enemy of the show. All of this nonsense comes together in a final episode that is so ridiculous I would sound stupid if I tried to explain it in this review. Let me just put it to you this way, all themes the show was building up to this point are thrown out the window, the main villain turns into a gigantic pansy, and the logic behind the ending makes absolutely no sense in the grand scheme of the show. Oh, and it tries to copy Evangelion in ways that are so unnecessary and artistically nonsensical in the show that I laughed out loud when I first saw them in this episode.
What in the world happened to Soul Eater? What happened to this really fun, always entertaining action anime in the second half of the show? What is with all this ridiculous emo nonsense that gets introduced in the second half? How the hell could Bones, the studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist and Eureka Seven fail so badly at this show? I have no idea how to answer any of these questions. If you are going to watch Soul Eater, watch the first 26 episodes, and then stop. Otherwise, you are in store for one of the strangest, confusing, and most disappointing action animes ever made. Come on Bones, you are better than this.

Story: The story is a very thought-provoking and great examination of the value of truly living your life, as opposed to passing through it aimlessly. It is about an apparently immortal robot named Casshern, who after killing a woman named Luna, creates the Ruin, a plague that causes the world to die. All life has withered away, and any survivors are on the brink of insanity as they are surrounded by death. His journey to discover his identity and role in this new world causes the robots he comes into contact with to realize the value of our existances and their
...
thoughts on life itself. It is a very engrossing, thought-provoking story for everyone.
Art: The drawing style is very minimalist, but is works incredibly in the context of the world of ruin. Everything is very angular and colors are usually very muted. It helps to establish the world of Casshern as one that is both unique and memorable. This carries over into the fight scenes as well, where the fast movements really compliment the sharpness of the drawings to create a very visually exciting and energetic sense of combat. The art style really helps to bring all the themes of this universe and the intensity of combat into full fruition.
Sound: The music is very fitting. It's mostly sinister, ominous tones used to bring out the dread of the world at hand. However, many tracks bring out the small shimmers of hope Casshern and his friends encounter in a world governed by death. It is these tracks that really stand out to me personally as great compositional scores and pieces that really bring the main themes of the show to light. "A Path" stands out as one of the best songs in anime this year.
Character: All characters in this anime are fully-fleshed out and are all very important in the grand scheme of things. The character of Casshern is a great lead. Yes, his amnesia is a little generic in anime in general, but it never becomes a problem and serves to re-enforce the themes presented. Ringo is a great kid character, never annoying but still very childish. She also serves as a great motivator for everyone, always inspiring them to search for a better tomorrow even as the odds are stacked against them. Lyuze, Ohji, and Friender all serve as great lead characters that all contribute equally to the story at large. The villians are real showstoppers as well. Dio and Leda are a great duo that are full realized and make very worthy adversaries to Casshern's team. Braking Boss as well is a great sideline villian. He is a master manipulator that always gets other people to do his work for him.
Casshern SINS is a fantastic anime series that deserves your attention. The depressing atmosphere may turn off some people, and in the first half of the show its basically all one shot stories, but that's OK. Everyone else who sticks around will get not only an outstanding action anime, but an outstanding action anime that makes the characters and you the viewer think at the same time. It is truly a remarkable and unique show for the current generation of anime.
Overall Score, 9 out of 10.

I'm not going to write about the plot of this movie since its essentially a remake of the first 6 episodes of the show shot for shot but with better animation and crisper visuals. But let me get one thing out of the way first, I FREAKING LOVED the original EVA series. Here we were with our boring and repetetive mech shows, and there came EVA to turn it all upside down along with all of anime. Also, End of Evangelion is not only an anime masterpiece, but a masterpiece in pure animation filmmaking.
I'm going to jump right in and tell whats different in this
...
remake. Not a lot actually. The first 2/3s of the film are essentially hi-def remakes of the first 4 episodes. Its not until the last 1/3 when the sniper angel fight is fought where the changes start coming at you. The final angel fight is way different, and almost better than the original. Some important stuff is revealed to Shinji a lot earlier than before, and Kaoru has a grand entrance on the moon. Yep, you heard me, on the MOON (that big object in outerspace that orbits the earth, in case I didnt EMPHASIZE that last point enough.)
The best thing about this film is revisiting this universe. Hideaki Anno, the show's creator, is striving to reinterpret his masterpiece with this new set of moives, and this first one does a great job of setting up new material to come, while at the same time remaining completely faithful about what EVA is really all about.
However, that's also where part of the movie's problems lie. Most of the movie is nothing new though, and you'll have to wait unitl the next 2 movies and the finale to really see the drastic changes Anno is making in this reinterpreted version of EVA. Also, this really isn't an issue, but as such a fan of the original series, this new movie set will never replace the original. The original Evangelion series inspired me to study animation filmmaking, and this new set of films simply doesnt have the same effect. Its still REALLY DAMN GOOD, just not as meaningful or revolutionary as before.
In conclusion, Rebuild of Evangelion 01 does its job and sets up the overhaul of the EVA series that Anno is striving to do. Its not at all revolutionary like the show, but it is still an interesting experiment in filmmaking, and I'm definately intrigued by how this story can be reinterpretted by Anno after all the stuff he went through making the show and End of EVA (mental breakdown and all). Watch the original series and End of EVA first in order to appreciate what these movies are really trying to do as a requirement though.

This is going to be a weird show for me to review, because I'm going to contradict my usual self a lot here. The good things about Dokuro-chan is its comedic writting. It's not really good or anything particurally original by any means, but its SO chaotic its entertaining. Every episode goes from one end of the comedy spectrum to the other over the course of 30 mins, along the way stringing such things like sexual tension between Dokuro and Sakura (...its odd lets just say), weird word phrasings that become disastorous, and blood. Lots and lots and lots of blood. Dokuro has a giant
...
mace that basically bludgeons Sakura anytime he does something wrong (which is very often). Its this controlled chaos of the show that manages it to be entertaining.
When I say this is entertaining, that doesn't necessarily mean good. One episode is basically a sugar rush, right afterwards you completely forget about what you just saw or anyting relating to it. Also, even though the comedy is very chaotic and acclectic, a lot of the individual jokes are hit or miss. Most of the funny stuff involves the obscene amounts of blood, but other times, things like Sakura's weird way of phrasing the word paint (watch episode 4 and read the translator's notes) seem a little out of place in all that has happened before.
In short, Dokuro-Chan at its core is nothing but quack entertainment. This can be both a good and a bad thing, because even though it is really entertaining when you watch it, on reflection, its almost miniscule. Just as long as you are not expecting a particurally original or well written comedy, you should at least moderately enjoy this.

The best thing about 5 Centimeters Per Second is how maturely it handles potentially incredibly sappy material. You really understand why Takaki feels so strongly about Akari simply by watching them together, many times without a word of dialogue. It's handled with such sensitivity that it doesnt come across as puppy love, but instead as real attraction and love between the two. Both characters are flawed, which makes this story all the more believable. The story plays out perfectly, as the different chapters really illustrate the two characters at clearly different points in their lives and how they relate back to eachother. Also, it is
...
perfectly paced and ends when it needs to. It doesnt drag anything out more than it should (I'm looking at YOU RUMIKO TAKAHASHI!!) with everything in perspective by the time the film is over.
Now the bad parts. The ending I was just talking about is debatable. Takaki makes some very peculiar decisions in the last chapter and the very last sequence will either make you love this movie or hate it. Personally the movie ended in a realistic manner and did exactly what the story needed it to. Second, as much as I say the material is handled so it isn't sappy, there are some moments of complete sapp-overload (I trademark this new word.) Some of the internal thoughts Takaki has about Akari border on rolling your eyes into the back of your skull. Its very rare it happens only about once per chapter, but still it is an issue nontheless.
In conclusion, 5 Centimeters Per Second is probably the best romance anime I have ever seen. This may not mean a lot since this is one of the two I have ever seen, but it is still a very well executed story and very believable, given you're in the right mood for this sort of thing. I was very surprized how much I liked this and I'm glad I took the time to watch it.

At this point in the review, I would start naming the good things about the show. Um...Jesus Christ, what the hell is there possitive to say about this anime? If I have to say three things, the animation is way better than this show deserves, and the opening theme is decent, not good, just decent, and the character designs are cute, when they're not being exploited.
Now on to the bad (warning: this may take a while to read, but be assured it will be funny, yet a little repulsive in its details.)
I'm not even going to sugar coat it, this is one of the ABSOLUTE
...
WORST animes I have ever seen, and it makes me cringe, even as I'm just sitting at my computer typing about it. And to think this was made by M-F(#*ING GAINAX. That's right, the studio behind this...thing...is also responsible for Evangelion, Gunbuster, Daikon, Gurren Lagann, and FLCL. Unbelievable.
There are numerous huge problems with this anime, so lets just start it off with the most obvious problem, the comedic writing. The laws of laughter tell us that a joke repeated too often loses its effectiveness overtime. Unfortunately, the writers of He is My Master never realized this, since the entire joke repetoir (I'm not an spelling major) consists of nothing but boob/panty/butt/bra/all of the above jokes. What makes this writing even more dreadfull is the fact that all these situations happen to 12-14 year old girls! So in addition to being lazy, the writing is also borderline pedophilic in nature. What is funny about seeing a 14 year old girl lose her bra, punch Yoshitaka across the room for looking, having another girl Anna (sorry I forgot there's another girl working there Anna, who has a pre-coming out of the closet crush on Izumi, at age 12 nonetheless) fantasizing about sleeping with a barely older 14 year old, all while an alligator(Pochi, dont even ask me to explain him) fantasizes about the same 14 year old girl, all within the timespan of 5 minutes?(my god that was a mouthfull) Simple answer: NOTHING! The writing in this anime is a cynical excersize in laziness and pedophilia.
As if that wasn't bad enough, none of the characters are likeable in any way. Yoshitaka is just a douche-bag whose sole purpose in life is to exploit underage girls in his maid outfits. Izumi is nothing but a idiot, for one running away since there are no signs of anything like abuse or anything like that, and two actually accepting this job. Anna, who I mentioned earlier, is a 12 year old girl who develops a borderline psychotic crush on Izumi, is just irritating to an almost science fiction level. Her constant wanting to be around Izumi is another way to slip in pedophilia in this show, this time in the form of lesbianism. The one good character in this show is the blonde sister Mitsuki, only because I don't know what to think of her. She seems totally fine about her job and its requirements and is somehow a master computer hacker (this girl can hardly dress herself without falling over, yet she can hack the computer system of an entire mansion), but she's essentially the obligatory blonde bimbo for any anime like this.
In conclusion, let me just sum it up this way: I watched a grand total of 3 episodes of He is My Master. Each episode has about 30 jokes, so a grand total of 90 jokes. I chuckled 1 time, cringed 89 times. He is My Master, in short, is just garbage. For the love of all that is holy and good in this world, avoid this thing like the plague.
Footnote: If you REALLY want to test your endurance for how much you can take of this series, watch episode 8. It introduces Izumi and Mitsuki's younger sister, 8 year old Karin, who while at the mansion trys on and walks around in a custom made maid outfit. Yea...an 8 year old, in a sexy maid outfit, whose father and mother find nothing at all wrong about this. It's official, this anime was indeed made by pedophiles.

There are quite literally too many good things to say about Gurren Lagann. First and foremost, this series is just a ton of fun. It is always entertaining and always manages to never repeat itself. The animation and action is UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC. Its not Gundam or Evangelion type mech action, instead, its more like FLCL mech action. The animation styly is simple and stylized at the same time, and watching it in motion is fascinating and beautiful. Let me put it to you this way, the action is so epic, that the final battle of the series, makes the word epic, sound irrelevant.
Next, the plot
...
is outstanding. It's not like a philosophical Eva type plot, but it manages to be both original (particurally during the second half of the show) and familiar at the same time. Most of all, its just really exciting. The characters are all really likeable, even the villians. Simon, Kamina, Yoko, and Nia are all VERY good leads, each with their own flaws and uniqueness. Even the supporting characters are all well defined and original. Rossiu becomes more and more interesting as the series goes on, as does Viral, one of the top-ranked Beastmen (Ganmen pilots). The characters all evolve at a natural pace and are all great.
Its almost impossible to really say what's wrong with Gurren Lagann, if there is. Um...episode 16 is a recap episode, so its kinda useless, and it may take some people 3-4 episodes to be really sold on this series. But other than that, I really can't say there's anything wrong with this anime.
In conclusion, Gurren Lagann ranks right up with FullMetal Alchemist, Spirited Away, and Death Note as on of the top 5 best animes of this decade. It doesnt do anything radical, but it is done in a very unique way and it is so incredibly well executed, you wont even care. This ranks in my top 10 anime of all time easily.
