Considering the very high rating, I'm a bit disappointed. Sad to say, because it certainly had potential to be better.
Characters are not very good.
It's debateable whether this is sci-fi or not. If it is, then it's ultra-soft sci-fi, seems more like fantasy in space to me.
Several underdeveloped and unresolved side-plots, even a few plot holes.
In 26 episodes, It's amazing how little character development they've managed to fit into such a simple story, considering other shows with way more complex stories does considerable more in half as many episodes.
I think this show would be better off if it had spent more time on the characters aboard
...
the Yamato and elaborated on the main plot. Instead it attempts to build an intergalactic universe it ends up not knowing what to do with.
The visuals and music, however, that's what this show has going for it. The space battles are as pleasing and spectacular as fireworks on New Year's Eve. Also, it was cool watching an old WWII ship in space.

I started watching this because it had a high rating and mechas, but I was really disappointed. After 10 eps the show didn't manage to engage me at all so I dropped it.
It might be that I'm in the wrong demographic for this show (born in the 80's), but I found very little about it to be enjoyable.
I heard the show was praised for it's animation, and I guess it's somewhat of a personal preference issue, but I was unimpressed by the low detail landscapes and background design, and the colors used made the show look flat and way too bright for my taste.
The mech
...
designs and sci-fi aspects left alot to be desired on my part. I didn't like the robots, and the explanations for how stuff works leans more towards fantasy than sci-fi in my opinion. The mechs turn into cars, they surf the skies on boards and there are even mechs with huge speakers for the cool kids - to me this just came off as silly (although the surfing bit is explained to some "scientific" degree).
Some of the characters look like they have personality, but I never felt the show managed to convey much of that during the episodes I sat through. Also, if you thought Kamille from Zeta Gundam was annoying, the protagonist male boy in this show is comparably worse.
The comparison to Neon Genesis Evangelion, apart from obvious similarities also found in many other mecha shows, is beyond me.
If I have to say something good about Eureka Seven, I'd say the music composed for it was good.
It may be that the show gets exponentially better in later episodes, but I can definitely go on living without ever knowing if that's true.

You don't need to have a philosophy major to enjoy this (I don't and I did). That being said, it most definitely throws a good portion of it in your face.
In my humble opinion, most of the plot and characters serves as surrogates for more or less abstract concepts and problems in themselves and in relation to each other. I'd recommend being at least a bit curious or interested in philosophy if you intend to watch this, because I believe the entire narrative style of the show intends to ask questions and meditate on them within the framework of an animated story. Never thought
...
I'd write something sounding that pretentious on the internet, but I guess I just did.
I think perhaps the show's weakness is asking more questions than it manages to answer adequately, and perhaps it overshoots it's mark at times. I'm not sure. I am, however, pretty sure I'd be disappointed if I hadn't watched it in good faith and just took the story at face value (as another cyberpunk action adventure).
I enjoyed the setting, the characters and the animation: The world was well drawn, the characters interesting (more or less), the colors and music fitting, and I even liked the power ballade in the intro! I usually get annoyed by too much fan service and, although the show isn't clinically cleaned, the amount of it is negligible. I watched the english dub and the voice acting was good.
I fully understand some of the negative criticism, but I applaud the obvious effort and risks the creators must've taken with this how. It worked for me.
I highly recommend this and I believe it's one I'll rember for quite some time.

I'm an adult. I watched the english dub. I have no prior experience with Appleseed-stuff. I do, however, have a positive bias towards the sci-fi, cyberpunk and post-apocalyptic genres in general. I have no strong opinions on CGI. I knew nothing about the film before watching it, but had a vague memory of someone telling me that it looked pretty good. With that in mind, this is my short review:
The aesthetics impressed me. The enviroment, sets, landscapes or whatever you want to call them, are appealing in the post-apocalyptic way.
Quite a few cool action sequences, explosions, gun fights etc. Entertaining and well made!
Characters look cool
...
and the dialogue is ok - but don't expect too much when it comes to depth.
I ended up caring little for the story, I was more invested in the cyborgs, the action and the landscape design while watching this.
I'd say: If you like the genre, think this looks somewhat appealing and need some entertainment, chances are you'll think it's ok - kick back and relax with some cyberpunk action. It won't change your life, but you probably won't feel mad you'll never get those 90 mins back either.
