This will be a general review on everything up to episode 14.
—————————————————————————————-
Execution. This show so far has the best romantic execution I’ve seen for anything streaming all year(2024). Roshidere? Eh. Makine? Really amusing, but not pushing romantic development like Blue Box.
What we have with Blue Box is a mature romance where not only there is a strong love triangle, but there is a thematic reflection of romantic development into the sports section. Yes, I understand that there could be a more in depth sports focus on Hina AND Chinatsu, but it seems the games that are intended to be ‘enjoyed’(like a regular sports anime)
...
are the ones about badminton, following Taiki.
Lots of arguments I see against this show is its pacing. I won’t deny that Taiki glazes both the love interests more a bit more than actually furthering the development with them, making it seem like he’s just ‘winging it,’ but people have to realize how much more genuine this makes the show. Each moment shared with BOTH interests is a reflection/unfolding of how they see each other, showing what there is to actually love.
Back to what I meant about Execution though. Blue Box does indeed make it obvious how things are going to turn out, from the romance, to the games themselves sometimes. What is done so well is the dialogue/monologue with each character. I would give a great example as of the recent episode, #14, where there was a dramatic shift for the romance. It left me confused, worried, wondering, and curious about how the romantic conflict will be solved.
I see great potential for the show as of now, but again, if pacing seems to become an issue, then that will truly be a letdown.
This is coming from a desperate Hina fan…

Recently, finishing Zoku, I came to realize that there was actually more, and was eccentric. Given that this was three parts, I find a need to make three mini reviews and generalized one.

Nadeko:
This segment already had made me happy by gifting Nadeko a good opening that represented herself. Now, for the arc itself, I was amazed. By starting with Yotsugi’s greed I found it amusing how her singular mistake allowed for a beautiful conclusion to Nadeko’s character. Given this, I’d recommend you also watch/read her past arcs all over again before jumping into this. Everything lines up so well and it again I’m grateful for the production team to choose this production order because it feels satisfying, making me feel as if I’m the person getting a conclusion here with the series. Personally, I haven’t read at all into the Monogatari series, but I hope more people—in the story itself— are able to recognize how Nadeko has changed as a person. Oh yeah, SODACHI appearance AND her mini conclusion too. Amazing.
DVS and Kiss-shot origins:
Here, it didn’t feel like I was watching Monogatari at all honestly. It felt like a completely different masterpiece of a work. When you hear someone say, “What is Monogatari even about?” I couldn’t even answer you at this point. The show changes on us to surprise us and shed light onto the possibility of a variety of backstories for many existing characters. The way I was glued to the screen absorbing all of this surprised me. To sum things, the role of this arc is to show another side of Shinobu that was hidden from us. What does that role further do? It allows us to further understand the ideology and motives behind her. Well done.
Return of Goatragi:
Honestly, after going a long time without seeing our original main character, this third arc felt incredibly refreshing. The interactions between characters really made me feel like I haven’t watched this show in years for some reason, very nostalgic for some reason. What astonished me the most how, even if not direct, the relationship between Araragi and Shinobu had grown here. My critiques about this arc is that there could’ve been a better use for old main characters. For instance, SODACHI should’ve had more interaction in this story. That part is really me being biased to her character, since her arc was one of my favorites. Really, I just felt like they could’ve drained more characters for a more compelling arc.
Overall:
Art - 10, I do miss the hair color of some characters, but this was done way too well.
Story - 9.5, Nadeko had a masterpiece of a conclusion, but third arc had more potential in my eyes.
Voice acting - 10, it’s Monogatari, nothing more to say.
Pacing - 10, each arc really felt good in pacing, no complaints.
Music - 9.7, I feel like the second opening could’ve been better, but the first opening and all OSTs were really good.
Just 10/10 really
In the end, I hope we can get more Monogatari content. Less fan service just like this season, though I’m well aware it can have meaning sometimes. Also, we need Tsubasa back, her character is basically my favorite.

*****Thematic Spoilers*****I wouldn’t even say that this was a romance, even though it was explicitly one. The reason I say this is because it’s a manga about getting past your fears. “One who is satisfied can never be deceived.”(not said in the manga, just a quote I keep to myself) Takagi, who learned to continue her passion regardless of death, realized that the idea of death is that it exists to kill our dreams, making us unaware of what we can achieve in a lifetime. We, as people, are highly limited and are forced to conform to societal standards, which is why we always worry
...
about what we can do in a short period instead of a lifetime. Amusingly like the idea of turning in a project in one night giving us so much stress, instead of what job we may have in 15 years.
This manga serves to remind us that though we are finite beings, we’re definitely allowed to dream beyond who we are. This is shown through the interactions between Hatsu and Hato. It attacks the purpose of life, proposing that humans purely exist to ‘chase,’ not to arrive at some destination. ‘Live in the moment,’ is the encapsulation I’d give this one shot. Oh, it’s a 9/10 because it’s only a one shot and I’m left starving for more, but I guess hunger would be an effect from any good work. I wouldn’t be lying if I said that this is a 10/10 too. I’m just not used to reading one shots.
Honestly, just forget what I said and give this a read. I took a lot from it because I think about the themes mentioned quite a bit, so I have a bias. (Also I commented this on mangafire.to, just felt a need to place this here too.)
