TL;DR I don't like this series, and it makes me mad, because every piece of the series is something I enjoy. Something about the way it's told just leaves me behind and and confused.

Honestly, I loved the art style here. I loved the glow effects. I liked the style for humans & hair. Designs were standard 'what I want to see in my anime' fare. I enjoyed and was very interested in the premise - from magic, to the world, to the school, to the character's personalities (even, and indeed especially, the OP Tatsuya. I find people who are 'on a whole other level' ... interesting, sue me.), motivations, & challenges. Opening and ending themes are going to be on my playlist for a looong time to come!

But in the viewing?

It's really flat and dull. Towards the last 10 episodes, I'm exceedingly confused and lost about what's going on. I can't tell if I'm just not picking up on a ton of 'foreshadowing' or 'developing' they're doing between the lines, or if it's really all just filler actions and dialogue that add to nothing.

I want to finish it because I'm just 3 and a half episodes from the end, and when I think about the premise and appearance of the show, it seems like a no brainer to do it. But watching it is a chore.

I paused the middle of my episode to come right this review in an effort to 'take a break' without closing the tab of the episode.

Very disappointing. On paper, this should've been one of my favorite shows.

Maybe someday I'll try the light novels after a few more years of Japanese study.
