In recent times, it's a challenge to find an anime that doesn't use recycled themes over and over again. To me, accidentally stumbling upon Myself;Yourself while randomly browsing crunchyroll is like finding a hidden gem amidst mainstream anime. While Myself;Yourself starts out as if it's your typical run-of-the-mill slice of life school romance anime with hints of harem... if you stick to it for a while... it isn't.
Story
Starting off with the return of the MC to his hometown, the beginning episodes felt as if it's a normal slice-of-life school anime with probable harem and love triangle. But as the series progresses, it starts to develop
...
as something that's not quite the norm. The drama, conflict left a strong impact which finally strikes at the end point of episode 11. The pacing felt right, except perhaps for the last arc of the story.
Art & Sound
No complaints for the art, not too bad but not too good either. The voice acting was generally great, but perhaps Aoi's voice is a bit too high-pitched and hence, annoying. Causing me to feel somewhat annoyed when she speaks.
Character
The characters are all unique. While at first glance each character seemingly fit into a certain stereotype, as the series progresses, their inner self and problems are brought out into the open. Revealing things we didn't expect when first starting the show. The protagonist threw me off, I expected him to be a normal, dense, and harem material high-school boy, but throughout the series, it is hinted that he is more than that. What didn't sit well with me was perhaps the purpose of having Aoi as a character there.
Enjoyment
Expecting this to be a run-of-the-mill romance school slice of life anime, when the fireworks started, it kinda threw me off. But, after coping with this, it is very enjoyable. One scene in particular (in episode 11), left a very lasting impression on me.
Overall
It's a great watch, especially for those who are bored of the generic anime these days.
