Saying with all certainty, this review does not really contribute significantly to the reasonable reputation of the series; however, I hope this will help extinguish the preexisting doubts whether to invest your time on this anime or not. Without further ado, here we go.
What are the qualities of this anime possess that make it stand out during the season?
1. Originality of the concept or idea
- I consider myself as someone who had already seen fair amount of titles, from the most banal to the most eye-catching
...
series- though only those series that an average consumer would know. Unique in its own way, Jigokuraku offered to the audience a different angle of action-fantasy early-Japanese-era-themed series. This particular kind of theme if you'll ask me, is easy to mess up and drive away the audiences from their seats. Now, if it wasn't for the fine production and dedication the studio made for this series it wouldn't be as good as it is but we're not here to laud Mappa but the one who made the plot palatable for the audience. In my humblest opinion, Jigokuraku really did a fantastic job in building up the pace of the story and coming up with a plot that would make a fan beg for the next episode.
2. Introduction of every characters and their highlights
- What I really dig in a series is "substance". And "substance" can be seen in characters. The more the character has its depth of its background the better it is; that's what also makes a series stand out. It is also the reason why I find most of the manwhas unbearably arid most of the time. In comparison to that, Japanese authors has their share of experience when creating characters that audience would be emotionally attached to. Jigokuraku has that. The series actually dives in to each of the characters' background in some level and spends time in introducing the prominent individuals. This enables the audience to have some sort of understanding of their thought process, varied personality, and what makes them "them".
Personally, the characters that stood out for me was Senta, Sagiri then Gabimaru. I wouldn't go far as to say that I relate to them in a good level but rather the beauty of their "soul", if you know what I mean.
3. Reasonable plot armor (or the lack thereof)
- We still haven't explored the entirety of how the story will unfold (haven't read the manga) but so far, I have been satisfied by the deaths of some and the survival of the key characters. Senta's episode was just beautifully woven by the author, kudos to that. You could argue and nitpick some scenes, I don't have time to argue.
4. Difficulty in overcoming adversaries
- Let's just acknowledge that Tensen are really giving the characters a hard time. Not disappointed. I'm almost as satisfied as I was with Claymore; however, I'll leave it up to you.
5. Twist
- Yes, there is and it's one heck of a twist. It's probably the reason why I rated this 8 instead of 7. I don't really have to say a lot aside from "good twist means good anime".
6. Opening and ending song
- Subjective but dang, they know how to pick the right song and MAPPA just takes the cake when we're talking about fire MVs. I've been replaying Work nonstop today.
Conclusion: I believe this series is not overrated. The rating corresponds well with the quality and entertainment it brings to the audience. I don't see anything in particular that is worth dropping for. My only advice is that, do not expect too much or be too critical; drop the attitude and enjoy the anime.
Sidenote: I decided to come out of my shell and muster up the courage in writing something. I deemed writing anime reviews as productive of my endeavor. Apologies for the limited vocabulary.
