"Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai" ("I want to eat your pancreas") is a drama movie about relationships, friends and facing the harsh reality of being ill. There are some types of relationships: family relationship, romantic relationship and friend's relationship. The relationship of Sakura and Haruki was above all of those. A relationship that complements each other, he couldn't make friends without her and she couldn't deal with her disease and fear of death without him.

pancreas. One day a boy named Haruki, comes across a notebook with the title "living with dying", then, he discovers that this is a diary belongs to his classmate Sakura. She then tells him about her pancreas disease and that she doesn’t have much time until she'll die. Nobody except her family knows about the disease. Sakura and Haruki become friends and start to spent some time together. However, Haruki is a cold and listless guy who finds it hard to communicate with people and make friends. He doesn’t seem to care about Sakura's disease. During the movie, Haruki starts to develop some emotions to Sakura but he yet can't to be fully emotional and expresses his emotion. Eventually he's starting to care about her disease and about her, he succeeds in expressing his emotions, but after that she dies in an unexpected tragic moment when someone stabs her. Then, Haruki starts to be more careful and sensitive for her and he is actually very sad about her death. Because of her death he becomes friend with Sakura's friend Kyouko.
The two main characters in this movie are well written because most of the movie concentrates just on the two of them, we can see the depth of those characters. Haruki, is an emotionless cold guy who has no friends and don’t care about anything. On the other hand, Sakura is a happy energetic and dominant girl who enjoys life even thought she is suffering from a pancreas disease and is going to die soon. She is very popular and cheerful; she wants to live her life without regrets. During the movie we discovers that Sakura actually afraid to die and she takes medicines in order to decrease the fear. Sakura is the opposite of Haruki, she is very emotional, sometimes she has emotions of happiness and sometimes she has emotions of depression.
The meaning of the movie is very significant, the title "I want to eat your pancreas" explained in the movie when Sakura tells Haruki about a religion where if someone else eats you, your soul will live on inside of them. A little bit before Sakura's death, Haruki send her a text massage which tells "I want to eat your pancreas". Later on, in the movie, he sees that Sakura replied to his massage, she has accepted to his offer and because of that, from now on, her soul will live inside of Haruki. From that moment, Haruki has changed, because of Sakura's soul that now is in him, he became a less listless cold guy and let his emotions to come out, he has gotten something special from Sakura which is the ability of making friends and communicating with society. "I want to eat your pancreas" simply means connecting souls with someone who is important to you.
Another interesting meaning in the movie is the title of Sakura's diary "Living with Dying". It means that Sakura wants to live her life like everyone else. She claims that everyone can die tomorrow and her disease is not something special. Everyone should live their lives without regrets because there is a chance that today is their last day. This movie proves this claim because all the time we thought Sakura will die from her pancreas disease but eventually, to our surprise, she has stabbed in the street and died, a completely random situation, it could have been anyone.
Friendship is something that goes all along with the movie. In the beginning, Haruki doesn’t show any will to be friends with Sakura and with the rest of his class. His classmate Issei offers him a gum (I call it "the gum of friendship"). Haruki refuses because in the beginning he was still a cold guy who doesn’t want an interaction with the society. But, in the end, after Sakura dies, he starts to be more friendly and when his classmate Issei offers him a gum again he accepts it, which means he accepted as a friend. In addition, Haruki probably wants to "take a gum" from his other classmates and that leads us to the end of the movie.
After Haruki has managed to be emotional and make a new friend, he wanted to talk with Sakura's friend Kyouko. He tells her about Sakura's disease and let her to read from Sakura's diary. Kyouko was angry at him because he hasn't told her until now about Sakura's illness, if she knew about it, she would spend more time with her. Haruki says her that if she'll able to forgive him some day he'd like her to become his friend. This ending is emotional and it is even greater because it comes from the emotionless guy, now he wants to make friends with people, something he didn’t care about in the past. After the credits we see Haruki and Kyouko come to Sakura's grave one year after her death. He says that being with people is difficult, he decided he wants to be like Sakura one-year ago and he thinks he starts to keep his promise. Then, we see Kyouko throws a gum to Haruki, that gum of friendship I have talked about before. He asks her "you like gum?" and she answers "I've taken a licking to it recently", which means Sakura didn’t affected just on Haruki, she affected on Kyouko too. This is what I liked about Sakura's character, even though she's not alive she still effects on other people. Sakura is still there; her soul exists in all of her friends.
The names of the characters play a big role in the movie. Sakura means cherry blossoms. Haruki means spring or tree. Cherry blossoms bloom only in the spring. The meaning of this is that Sakura is a part of Haruki, even after her death she'll bloom in him forever.
The sound of the movie is amazing, both opening and ending are great and the music during the movie really gives you a good feel. But the ending theme is the greatest, it's playing right after Haruki says Kyouko he'd like to be her friend. This song kicks you hard right after the movie ends and it's well done and very exciting.
The art and animation are really great, it gives you a sense of a real world which makes the characters and the world they are live in a much deeper world.
In the end of the day, "Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai" is a great movie that really touched me, I like its theme and conclusion. The characters were deep, great and well developed. I liked the ending of the movie; I'll remember it for a long time. I recommend it for anybody who likes to enjoy from a good movie, I think it's one of the best out there. I'll give it a 9/10.
